I am continuing my meetings and learning and working the steps. The problem I'm having is that I am not a religious person and the Higher Power conversation is a difficult one for me. I've gotten some good advice and I have some ideas on how to make it work for me but I'd love to hear from you all if your willing to share.
Thank you
You're doing great, keep on taking it a day at a time. I relate, and it will get better for us, we are on the right track. Truth WILL set us free, even if losing people we love and have betrayed hurts immensely... All we can do from now on is be changed people who not only try their best but do the best, because now that we are aware of our addiction, it's our responsability to treat it ; just like someone with cancer would be responsible for taking his meds.
About the higher power, I also struggled a lot of first, as I was not spiritual at all. I work in a rehab so I was lucky enough to get amazing guidance do understand the whole higher power. What helped me the most is when a therapist at work told me : "we all serve something. We all have a higher power. Maybe before you served Lying, and now you are serving Fear." What she meant by that is so true. You already have a higher power, and you need to find a new one. For me, it clearly was fear that I was serving. I lived in fear of my lies being discovered. In my head I was always thinking "i'm afraid I'm afraid I'm afraid". Your new higher power can be Love, Service, anything. It's something that you will are serving.
All this being said, my higher power doesn't have a face or a name, it's just in my mind some kind of Force of nature that will "make everything ok in the end". I can tell you that having a higher power, turning my fears to him and SURRENDERING has reduced my anxiety immensely.
Hope this helped, hang in there.
