Tough day with my Dad - lost my focus, but still lie-free - today is better, but still slightly out of balance

Hi, I'm new here. I'm a liar. I've been lying for pretty much my whole life, 60 years. The last 35 I've been with a wonderful woman who is like an open, positive book. And I keep trashing our relationship. I've been closed off emotionally for pretty much the whole time and lately I really made a mess of things. About 15 years ago I had an on again/ off again affair with one of my wife's best friends. It ended in 2001. My wife found out about it back in Dec, going through a bunch of my emails that I had backed up. We've gone to our minister for counseling and we have been building things back up, with several fights along the way, until this morning. A piece on the radio talked about unwanted social networking people popping up. My wife asked if I'd ever been contacted by the affair woman. I said no, but that her best friend had tried to connect with me back in Dec. when everything blew up, but that I'd deleted her message and didn't reply. Our new fight was because I hadn't told her about this 3 months ago, when I was first trying to stop lying. And bringing it up now just opened the old wound again. So not just lying, but WHEN I'm telling the truth is just as important. If's I'd just said no this morning (a lie of omission) I'd still be cozy with my wife who now wants me out of her life. I don't know if our relationship is salvageable. I hope so. Does anyone know of a way to keep in the moment so we don't screw up like this?

Hi. My name is Gabriel and this is going to be the first honest day that I can remember.

I messed up again and lied by saying I did not do something when I actually did. Three different things my wife asked me about and I chose to say no I did not do that, but then admitted to it. Things are once again very rocky in our relationship. I felt like I was making great progress but now I'm back to day 0 of being lie free. It is difficult not to feel discouraged and hopeless but I have to keep reminding myself that I was able to string together quite a few days in a row without lying so it is possible. Time to start over again and continue to pursue telling the truth. Things from the past keep surfacing and rearing their ugly head. Dang - why does it always seem so hard. I feel like I have been so busy lately that my recovery/rehabilitation efforts have stalled. Starting later this week, I am taking 10 days off of work and life to hang out in a cabin and just read, meditate, reflect and journal. I pray that I come to some realizations about myself and my life and what has caused me to do what I do and how I can really change.

Welcome Gabriel - Iswan - remember it's one day at a time, but every day. For me I have to work the program first thing everyday. I don't do shit until I've worked my program and that is the only way I get through. Yesterday was a stressful, but lie free day and I expect today will be s imilar.

Larry, it is far more difficult for me to lie than to fess-up and face the truth - usually fears associated with the truth never materialize or if they do they are far less severe than being caught in a lie.

One day at a time Gabriel. Larry I know you don't see it now brother but the fact that this is tearing you up inside is a great thing. It always gets darkest before the dawn. I spend each day dreading the moment when I am faced with the choice of lying or not. I'm trying to retrain my brain because BTR is so right...Its never as bad as getting caught. The truth is this thing that is unto itself. It doesn't have to explain or hide - it just is. There is no betrayal in the truth; only in the act of covering up; lying. What I am trying to hide is not the crime, the hiding is....
Now that my brain has realized this, I hope my mind follows suit...
Couldn't sleep last night and watched a movie - this quote stuck with me..
