Liars Anonymous Community Group
A support group to provide those with a compulsive addiction to lie a place to share hope, strength and courage with others like them; solve our common problem and help others with a compulsion to lie. We aren't alone!
Welcome, Chuck. It's good to see you starting to take steps in the right direction to establish an honest routine. Modifying behavior and reducing lying is a very difficult task, but it can be done by anyone as long as they stay committed. This is a very slow process, so prepare to be patient. One of the strategies I found very helpful was learning to accept and love who I really am. Most of us struggle with low self-esteem and feelings of worthlessness. We rely on lying to feel like we have control, and to try to make ourselves look better in front of others. Perhaps you share this struggle too.
The first person I had to start being honest with was myself. This does not mean self-deprecation and harsh judgement, but an honest, hard evaluation and acceptance. I am 28 years old and just now learning how to drive. I felt like I am not a real man because I did not have this skill. I made up an elaborate lie about a being in a horrific car accident which "prevented" me from learning how to drive, when in reality it was my own insecurity that held me back. The only way for me to move forward was to accept this fact, forgive (not excuse) myself for developing this unhealthy coping strategy and take direct actions to address my inability. I believe all of us can sight some shortcoming which we chose to run from through our lying. We all made a chose to stop running, and so have you. I am proud of you for choosing to make this change. Welcome to the community, and good luck on your journey. Take it one step at a time, start small, start by looking inwards, and never give up. You can do this :)
I am going to model your goal Max, taking it one step at a time, and try for two weeks as well. So goodbye until my next check in guys, I am Chuck and I am a liar. I am 1 day honest with a goal to be honest for at least 2 weeks. Until next time.
