Bipolar Disorder Support Group
Bipolar disorder is not just a single disorder, but a category of mood disorders marked by periods of abnormally high energy and euphoria, often accompanied by bouts of clinical depression. This is the place to talk about your experience with bipolar disorder, learn from others' experiences, and find support.
Expect imperfection and be willing to be surprised when things work!
And you can curse like a sailor; just be nice to each other.
We all have enough hardship to deal with in a day without tearing each other down.
First off, thanks for coming by our group and joining the conversation.
For myself- I'm not worried about a CL telling us what we can and cannot discuss.
I'm more worried about having someone who is bipolar deciding who to report and who not to based on their own interpretation of the Rules of the Road. We bipolars aren't really known for our ability to always make the most rational decisions.
Personally, I'm worried about having someone who, by nature, will have periods of 'normalcy' followed by periods of instability making calls on what, or who, is offensive and should be moderated.
On the opposite side of the coin- having a CL who is not bipolar would not inherently understand our needs, moods and mannerisms. There are behaviors that we 'excuse' due to the illness and someone who is not bipolar might not understand, thus, leading to people who are simply 'acting out their illness' would be ostracized.
Another issue is that bipolar sufferers tend to have issues with authority. In fact, it's one of the markers that the medical field uses to diagnose us. Having a CL could cause many people, like myself, to withdraw and 'perfect' everything until this board is no longer of any use to them.
Please consider our votes on this issue. I'm sure that DS has the best in mind for it's members. I'll I'm asking is to allow us the chance to decide for ourselves if we want a Community Leader or if we'd prefer to use the tools already at our disposal.
Then maybe we always need to have 3-4 CLs in this community working together and by consensus.
Let's create a solution that honors the needs of this community and still allows people to step forward and push themselves to improve by taking responsibility.
That is why we're expanding the CL program.
The CLs in the Depression Community have had to take a hands-off approach because there have been too few of them. They have worked closely with us to help build the foundation for the CL program to expand.
Like most things here, we didn't mandate change from the top, we had a kernel of an idea and asked for a few willing volunteers to beta-test, kick the tires, and try to break it.
Now, months later, we think we have a CL program that will work for most if not all communities and we are ready to ask for more people to join in.
We expect there to be problems because we are human and dealing with real issues. When problems arise, instead of abandoning the whole program, we'll find a way forward.
Frankly, it's much easier to tear things down than to build them.
It will still change as your needs change
Simply because it's not true for you- doesn't make it untrue for the rest of us.
If it takes a consensus to ban a member then fine. I will try to deal with this change.
For the record- I am NOT happy with this change nor do I plan to support it's formation. CL's sound too close to hall monitors and I am beyond the age where I need them any longer.
