Hidradenitis Suppurativa Support Group
Hidradenitis suppurativa (hi-drad-uh-NIE-tis sup-yoo-ruh-TIE-vuh) is rare, long-term skin condition that features small, painful lumps under the skin. The disease manifests as clusters of chronic abscesses or boils, sometimes as large as baseballs, that are extremely painful to the touch and may persist for years with occasional to frequent periods of inflammation,...
What are you doing? How much??
You should only be taking 50mg Zinc and 500mg of Turmeric daily. and you should take them with food. ESPECIALLY if your having stomach distress.
It is not uncommon for things to flare up a bit when you first start, however, it should calm down within a few days.
If not Stop taking both, wait a couple of weeks, then start back at half the above dose.

A little background (if you don't want to know, skip this block:)
I'm a male, and I'll be 40 this month. I smoke 2 packs a day and I'm at least 100lbs overweight. I started having this HS problem in my early 30's. It all started from a boil on the back of my neck. It would not heal! Every day it oozed more nastyness, and what came out of it was rank smelling. It grew bigger and bigger and then started making these sinus tracks all the way around my neck with new boils forming at different points around the tracks. I finally went to a doctor and he prescribed some sort of antibiotic and this salty solution that I had to add to these little pieces of cloth and put them on affected areas. That seemed to work at the time, everything went away except for the big boil that started the whole mess at the back of the neck. The contents of it got hard, and so now there is this permanent lump on the back of my neck that occasionally flares up and creates a boil (I still have it there to this day, a decade later.). About the time I got treatment for that, I started getting boils under both my underarms and in the buttocks/upper leg area. The first few I got I attributed to my wallet in the back pocket causing irritation at that spot. However, when it migrated to the other side, then to my underarms, I knew something was up. I finally had it diagnosed by one of the many doctors/dermatologists I've seen as HS.
At any rate, this new daily routine of mine consists of 2 Turmeric tablets (900mg each- "Finest Natural" from a local Walgreens) and 2 Zinc tablets (50mg each - also from Walgreens). I take one of each when I get up in the morning, and also late in the afternoon when I'm back from work.
I waited to start my treatment until I felt I was starting to have a flare up. So this past Friday, I felt one just starting on the back of my leg, (annoying enough to put a bandage on it). I also had a fairly large one in my underarm area that was starting to make it difficult to move my arm.
No change all day Friday, didn't really expect any.
On Saturday afternoon I noticed that the one in my leg must have burst as the bandage on it was getting red. So I started to pull on the bandage to clean/redress the area. As I pulled on the bandage, blood started flowing like a river from the area down my leg!
(This next part is REALLY REALLY gross... just warning you...)
I thought "Wow, ok". So, I continued pulling the bandage off. At about 1/2 way off (as I was watching the mirror while I pull it off this reddish BLOB dribbled down my leg and onto the floor. In the decade of boils I've had, I've never had this happen! The blob had a consistency close to that of strawberry jam (not like jelly or jello), and seemed to be made of blood, pus, and ?? (fat perhaps). It was about a tablespoon full of blob. I cleaned the area and redressed the now open wound.
The strange part of this is, that was the SMALLER and least "ripe" of the two boils I had at the time. It should not have burst on Saturday, I would have normally predicted it to burst normally by Tuesday.
The other boil (the larger one) oddly did not pop Saturday afternoon, but it did ripen fully by Sunday morning, and then drained normally. This one too seemed to clear up faster than expected. I would say it cleared up a day sooner than expected.
Currently I do not have any more active boils. I do have a raised, slightly tender area on my other leg that could develop into a boil. This is also odd, as I normally have two or three going at any given time.
This is promising, so I'll continue the Turmeric and Zinc and report my findings...

I'm still boil free... sort of.
The one on the back of my leg that bust suddenly is STILL discharging blood. I left an unwelcome present on my friend's couch.. :( Fortunately it was on leather, so no harm done...
I also am still getting tender bumps that keep looking like they will turn into full blown boils. However so far they dissipate and get re-absorbed within two days.
I forgot a treatment once, so that day I only had half the normal dosage I've been taking. Other than that I've been taking them like clockwork.
I took a dose of T&Z one morning on an empty stomach, and I started getting a nasty case of sour stomach on the drive to work one morning. I'll never do that again...
I let everyone know when I find out more.

I wonder if climate plays into HS.
I had almost daily HS flare ups when I lived in Florida. I moved to Ohio for about 1 1/2 years, and did not have ANY the entire time I lived there.
When I moved back to Florida, I started getting them again almost immediately after moving back.
So I'm still here in Florida suffering, but you have to go where the job is I guess... :(

So far, I haven't had an outbreak once all the existing boils healed... Looking good for T&Z so far!!

Cool. Start with 50mg of Zinc and 500mg of Turmeric daily for 30 days and see how your doing. If things are getting better, then drop back to 5 days a week with two days off. It is about the ideal amount for me. I have been using it for going on 4 years. I has made a huge difference for me.
