Beating Trich Community Group
You mean that there is a name for IT? Im not weird? Trichotillomania, that big, long word that is the bane of our world. With knowledge and support of others we CAN break free and live without this disorder interfering with our lives. Lets keep this uplifting and supportive and give each other the encouragement the other needs to make it to that next day.

Hi, My name is Sam and I'm new to this group. I am 23 and have had trich since I was 12. Over the years I have tried many times to stop, however it's only this past year that I have started to research ways of stopping, and have been really determined to do it. I plan on doing so with a combination of understanding, will-power, exercise, trying the John Kender diet, and seeing a therapist. I love designing, illustrating, cooking, extreme sports, exercising, seeing live music and reading. I would love to provide others with encouragement, and maybe get some support when I fall.

C: 3
A score of 3 for me!!!! Woooo! Haven't had a smiley face on my calendar in over a week!
All pulling took place during the day. I wore a headscarf this afternoon and evening to (successfully) prevent further pulling :)
Stay strong, smiley face is wonderful!!!!
Hugs! You can do this!
Ah I got a 4 for yesterday. I think S:11, C:4. But it may have been a little more. I lost track a little. That is something that I do find it hard to do, keep count. Because I don't want to be expending that much energy on remembering how many hairs I've pulled!
Today I lost track also. I'd say S:15, C:7. That's pushes me into a rating of 5. Sigh. I just didn't care to use barriers today. And I found myself pulling at the slightest little stresses. Blarg. Well I can use barriers tonight and thank goodness there's always a fresh start tomorrow.
trichdr, I've written out my system below. It's a liiiiiittle complicated.
0 = 0 points
1 = 1-2 points
2 = 3-5 points
3 = 6-9 points
4 = 10-14 points
5 = 15-24 points
6 = 25-39 points
7 = 40-54 points
8 = 55-69 points
9 = 70-84 points
10 = 85-100 points
1 hair pulled consciously (on purpose) = 1 point
1 hair pulled subconsciously (not on purpose/auto pulling) = 0.5 point*
* Except I think, when the amount of subconscious hairs goes over 10 or 15. Then I think they've got to be counted as 1 point each.
Hugs!
Well I wore bandaids in my thumbs all day and night yesterday, and guess what? 2 hairs pulled subconsciously and 0 hairs pulled consciously. Woop! This is my second 1 for the month. The first one was 2.5 weeks ago.
Glad to hear you are wearing the bandaids. I have started using them the past week and they are just like magic. I have like NO urges to pull at all.
Interesting system re: counting the subconscious vs conscious pulls differently. What do you define as a "subconscious" pull?
I am gonna admit that it does seem a little complex to me, lol. So many points!! But I'm like very literal minded and if it's a new strategy that works for you then go for it!!
Oh and belated happy anniversary to you. And good luck with the job hunt!
And yes my system is complicated! Honestly once my rating gets to a 4 or over I typically just give myself a one number rating. The points were previously referred to as"hairs" so 100 points equals 100 hairs, etc etc. but when I introduced half points for sub pulling I changed the wording from"hairs" to "points". I definitely do like noting the difference between subconscious and conscious pulling. Ok subconscious (or unconscious if you prefer) is when you pull a hair but only realise you've done it AFTER the fact. Conscious pulling is where you realise what's happening but choose to do it anyway.
I forgot to wear my bandaids until the afternoon today but I managed to only pull two hairs subconsciously. Bandaids are on now. They are very effective for me right now. Ah aren't the cycles of Trich funny/really frustrating.
And just in case anyone read my system and thought "wot! All those points!" I've rewritten it below. For anyone interested.
0 = 0 hairs
1 = 1-2 hairs
2 = 3-5 hairs
3 = 6-9 hairs
4 = 10-14 hairs
5 = 15-24 hairs
6 = 25-39 hairs
7 = 40-54 hairs
8 = 55-69 hairs
9 = 70-84 hairs
10 = 85-100 hairs
Conscious pulls = 1 point
Subconscious pulls (up to 5) = 0.5 points.
For everyone who read my system and thought "wot! All those points!" I've rewritten it below. For anyone interested.
0 = 0 hairs (good day)
1 = 1-2 hairs (good day)
2 = 3-5 hairs (good day)
3 = 6-9 hairs (good day)
4 = 10-14 hairs
5 = 15-24 hairs
6 = 25-39 hairs
7 = 40-54 hairs
8 = 55-69 hairs
9 = 70-84 hairs
10 = 85-100 hairs
Conscious pulls count as 1 hair
Subconscious pulls (up to 5) count as 0.5
Oof pretty high urges today. Emotions, why must I feel you? 2 hairs pulled, one on purpose. Its 4:30pm, I can do it!
