Beating Trich Community Group
You mean that there is a name for IT? Im not weird? Trichotillomania, that big, long word that is the bane of our world. With knowledge and support of others we CAN break free and live without this disorder interfering with our lives. Lets keep this uplifting and supportive and give each other the encouragement the other needs to make it to that next day.

Hi, My name is Sam and I'm new to this group. I am 23 and have had trich since I was 12. Over the years I have tried many times to stop, however it's only this past year that I have started to research ways of stopping, and have been really determined to do it. I plan on doing so with a combination of understanding, will-power, exercise, trying the John Kender diet, and seeing a therapist. I love designing, illustrating, cooking, extreme sports, exercising, seeing live music and reading. I would love to provide others with encouragement, and maybe get some support when I fall.

Ah, doing a lot of subconscious pulling I'm realising. Crap. Need to dial up that old awareness. Practise makes perfect!
Ha ha ha law and order is definitely an acquired taste, i just find it really relaxing for some reason. it's the right mix of reliable predictability (as in, it's not like they ever LOSE A CASE in an episode) and intellectual stimulation.
I also watch a lot of cartoons and old disney movies lol.
Practice makes perfect! Keep at it! You will pick yourself back up!
sending hugs your way!
Thanks as always for the lovely comments. I feel pretty crappy about being away for so long. My pulling is the same as it always is, moderate but chronic.
I had an interesting chat with my psych about it. She doesn't know much about the condition but when I told her the triggers can be anxiety or boredom she said "Mmm." She explained that boredom is a complete loss of control. We aren't happy doing what we're doing, but we don't know what we want to do, so therefore we feel a complete loss of control. Interesting, huh! She said that unconsciously I pull to gain control of a certain situation. But funnily enough, pulling feels like an loss of control to me. It is. My silly brain tells me to pull, to be able to control SOMETHING. Instead of pulling I need to do something else. Anything else, just something. Only then do I truly have control. So it's an interesting thing to know. When I get an urge, I think about what I'm trying to control. It could be something negative happening in my book or on tv, it could be a stupid driver when I'm on the road, it could be someone doing something I don't like. It could be that I'm not being active enough.
I guess when I think about it, I've used trich as a method of control in the past too…huh. It's always so interesting to hear a new, fresh perspective. Thanks for sharing!
I have used pulling as a means of control....like when I am overwhelmed with a bunch of tasks, pulling has made me feel calmer. Even though the behavior itself feels out of control, it makes the situation feel better (even though is only very temporary.)
I hope all is well with you and your family!
I definitely pull in order to feel "control" when I am feeling overwhelmed or other highly anxious emotions. So I definitely hear ya there. That is great that you are able to talk about your trich with your counselor. Like Jes said thank you for sharing!
