After surgery, Chemo and radiation we hoped we were on the road to recovery, but the cancer spread to her brain. More surgery and radiation was done, and once completed we jumped on a plane from Australia so she had the chance to go to Disneyland with our daughter.
Layla will not remember, but it was the best thing we could of done. Our 5 week holiday had to be cut short after 2 weeks due to increasing back pain.
We went straight from the airport to the hospital where she was operated on within hours and we found the cancer had spread to the lining of her spinal column and brain.
We spent the next 3 weeks in hospital until she realized nothing more could be done. Somehow she lasted another 3 weeks at home.
Every hour of every day for those 6 weeks someone was awake next to her. I spent every waking moment with her.
No amount of time together was ever going to be enough and she passed with her parents her brother and sister, and me by her bedside in our home.
Yesterday was a very emotional day. We had a gathering of about 50 friends and family. We cooked her favorite food (chicken schnitzel) lit a candle and drank her favorite red wine in her memory.
It is tough being a sole parent to a 2 year old who had the most loving mother she could ask for, but I am lucky I have her to drag me forward into this new life. And We are lucky to have an amazing family and a very large group of supportive friends who still go out of their way to help us whenever needed.
Best wishes to everyone here.
I've found DS a lifeline, better than counselling or books, although they've been a big help too.
I'm still finding it hard but am managing much better than I was at the start. Having made it through 18 months, my next challenge is the court case against the driver (the police tracked him down and charged him after 12 weeks). The trial date has not been set but may be in the first half of next year.
He still hangs out here and makes lots of noise which is very comforting. October 22 would have been our 35th anniversary. He was the best time I ever had.
I miss him everyday. I'm figuring out what is my next journey in this life.
