To all of my DS "neighbors" in the path of Hurricane Sandy, my prayers are with you and your families to safety ride out whatever Sandy sends our way.
For many of us, this is yet another "first".....the first major weather event since losing our spouse. My husband died suddenly and unexpectedly on April 5, 2012.Not a day goes by that I don't feel exhausted from doing the work that the two of us used to do, and that was just the day-to-day chores. For the big things like a tropical storm, blizzard or tornado warning, we would both be securing things outdoors and making sure we had plenty of provisions for ourselves and our five pets.
Fighting my way through the packed supermarket and CVS earlier today, I felt alone and angry, then guilty for feeling that way. Then I thought about all of you who are in similar situations I felt things fall into perspective, and I felt comforted.
If we have "weathered the storm" of losing a loved one, Hurricane Sandy should be a piece of cake!

I read your ongoing posts with horror, but the last entry....especially the part about the magically appearing Christmas tree....brought a big smile and a bigger THANK GOD.
Thanksgiving blessings to you and those you love. You are living proof that whatever doesn't kill us makes us stronger.

I hope the local press knows about the Christmas tree lighting and ornament hanging and will give it coverage. What a beautiful Thanksgiving story that will make.

We will be fine - one of the few benefits of being widowed is that no matter what happens, there isn't much that is worse.
We lost stuff - it's just stuff (although a hot water heater would be nice right about now, lol)
I think my 19 year old had the most perspective - she called from college to check on us that night & I told her that the water was in the house. Once I had assured her that we were ok & that the house was not floating away with us in it (It's brick over concrete block - it may be sinking now, but that night it didn't budge)
The ONLY thing she asked about was my husband's ashes.
When you are staring at the possibility of losing everything, the things that matter are pretty clear.

Bless your daughter for her concern about Dad's ashes. Seems as though the the wise and practical daughter follows in her Mom's footsteps.
