To all of my DS "neighbors" in the path of Hurricane Sandy, my prayers are with you and your families to safety ride out whatever Sandy sends our way.
For many of us, this is yet another "first".....the first major weather event since losing our spouse. My husband died suddenly and unexpectedly on April 5, 2012.Not a day goes by that I don't feel exhausted from doing the work that the two of us used to do, and that was just the day-to-day chores. For the big things like a tropical storm, blizzard or tornado warning, we would both be securing things outdoors and making sure we had plenty of provisions for ourselves and our five pets.
Fighting my way through the packed supermarket and CVS earlier today, I felt alone and angry, then guilty for feeling that way. Then I thought about all of you who are in similar situations I felt things fall into perspective, and I felt comforted.
If we have "weathered the storm" of losing a loved one, Hurricane Sandy should be a piece of cake!

Still have power - made it thru the first tide - not as high as Irene on that one, so hopefully we will be OK. Don't think the dock is going to make it - tide getting higher than the poles it rides up & down on, other than that, so far so good.

Just came in from the deck (2nd floor, open on 3 sides) to get some bread out for the birds. It was quite a challenge waiting for the wind to blow in the direction I wanted the bread to go. Squirrels got some peanuts too.
Sending positive energy for a safe outcome to all of you on eastern shorelines.

I'm sending you some dry hot air from the california hills!
@juanita i remember when we had unprecedented snow in an area not too far from Reno NV. we were all suppose to go out and buy snow shovels and generators...which had already been sold out for weeks and were no where to be found. all i had was a huge shovel once used for cleaning horse pens! it broke from over use and the weight of the snow! we had just moved into the area and were told we didn't need any snow removal equipment because it didn't snow that much!...except THAT year.
Thus the wise advice not to believe anything you hear and only half of what you see!
(I had gotten to this point in my comment when the power cut out again...after I had put away the candles and flashlights, of course! Power was out for a couple of hours.)
Thankfully, there was no flooding or property damage for us, but one of my late husband's daughters lives at the Jersey shore and her family had to evacuate.
Many of my local friends thank you as well for the many helpful hurricane tips and hints you shared. Should we get hit with another one, we'll be much better prepared.
I am still in awe of the outpouring of friendship from my DS family. I'm pretty much of a loner by nature, so this kind of concern and attention is very special. It is great to know that, although loss and sadness brought us together, we are also able to relate to one another on many other levels.
