To all of my DS "neighbors" in the path of Hurricane Sandy, my prayers are with you and your families to safety ride out whatever Sandy sends our way.
For many of us, this is yet another "first".....the first major weather event since losing our spouse. My husband died suddenly and unexpectedly on April 5, 2012.Not a day goes by that I don't feel exhausted from doing the work that the two of us used to do, and that was just the day-to-day chores. For the big things like a tropical storm, blizzard or tornado warning, we would both be securing things outdoors and making sure we had plenty of provisions for ourselves and our five pets.
Fighting my way through the packed supermarket and CVS earlier today, I felt alone and angry, then guilty for feeling that way. Then I thought about all of you who are in similar situations I felt things fall into perspective, and I felt comforted.
If we have "weathered the storm" of losing a loved one, Hurricane Sandy should be a piece of cake!

Prayers, warm hugs and positive energy are coming your way for a healthy report on Tue. That adage about what doesn't kill us makes us stronger seems really appropriate for lots of us at DS. Hope you can relax and think calming thoughts til Tue.

I live north of Philly and praying electric does not go out as they are saying on weather channel. My prayers are with you others in the path of Sandy also. God Bless You All!

So you're a pro at this hurricane stuff. Even so, I appreciate how hard it is to go it alone. Every time I think I'm done with precautions, I either think of or hear about something else. I'm already exhausted, and the wind hasn't even started to blow yet! Part of the tension seems to be the steady news coverage. It's like living through the event 100 times before it even happens! Thanks for thinking of us in Sandy's path.

Fingers crossed that we keep power. I'm trying to figure out how to charge my late husband's TracFone as a backup. I haven't touched it since he died and am getting confused with the instructions. Just found the Walgreens receipt and cards for some "air time" that he purchased but might be expired. Looks like a quick trip to the local store is in order.
I'm so happy I started this discussion and have had so many replies. DS really is like being part of a cool family in a friendly neighborhood.
I have a "new" generator on my back porch that has not been cranked up since Joe died. Lot of good it would do me all choked up with old gas. I'm lucky we haven't had any extended outages other than a few hours at a time.
Please evacuate if you are in any area deemed critically dangerous. Don't wait til the last minute to evacuate!!!!! Prayers coming your way,guys!
Next-door neighbor saw my son here yesterday, and told him that I should go to back to their house with them. That annoyed me a little bit (well, okay, it annoyed me A LOT); I told them that I prefer to stay in my own house. Do I really look and act totally helpless? Does anyone get those kinds of "suggestions"?
Hoping all's well with you dear friends...keep the faith that we will manage just fine.

If you can still get to a store buy something called an inverter. It plugs into your cars cigarette lighter and it produces house current so you can charge your phones computers etc. get the largest wattage you can because it will work on bigger items.
As in a previous post fill anything you can and freeze them. Make sure your cars are full of gas. Get more propane if you have a gas grill. If not get one of those portable propane camping grills.
And finally lots of instant coffee.

Hang in there everyone, and try to keep your TV weather viewing to a reasonable minimum. If I watch for more than 5 min, I can feel my BP rising!
