At this point (seven months after losing the love of my life and at 47) I do not plan on ever getting married again. How many perfect people are there in the world? If I had to say now I would say no. I am not sure what I would say five years from now. I'll let you know when I get there.

For years I have known that if my husband predeceased me, I would remain single. I hadn't ever intended to marry, but when I met Michael, I changed my mind. We often teased I was his last wife and he was my only husband. Now he is gone; it is my turn to apply the lessons he taught by his example. I have the chance to continue his legacy of loving and caring for others. It will take some time to adjust to being without my "life mate," but I plan to explore the unique ways I can express my talents and gifts to honor his memory

Interesting reading all of your posts. I loved my husband very much and it has been almost a year. Spending time with my girlfriends is great and fun and I really do not need a man to support me...but I would love to get another shot at love. My life is not over yet!

I am a 64 year old man that was married to the same lady for
39 years. We had several discussions about what we might do when
one of us passes on. She said she would never re-marry.
Myself? I would like to re-marry, more so for friendship/companionship than anything else. She even told me once that if she goes first, that she wanted me to be happy, not live
the rest of my life alone. Even the Bible says it is not good for man
to be alone! I have even dated a few widows near or in their 60's.
All of them so far have as much as mentioned they had no intention of re-marrying. I intend to continue searching until one decides
they want to spend the rest of their life with me. At this age, that
is easier said than done!

At this point I feel that I do want to stay single. My wife was everything to me and our Children. She passed away after a 2 year battle. She was so strong and resilient. Although she was on Oxygen 24/7 for 2 years, she always continued to do what she Loved to do and that was to take care of her Family! I think if she passed away tragically or all of a sudden I might have thought another way. But because we went through the illness together we became ever so closer Spiritually! I will continue to have that connection with her, because I want to!!

I lost my beloved Dianne 2 years ago and haven't recovered from this void left. For so long I gave her my undivided attention and always placed her first. As you can imagine, this caused my grown children and family members great anger and one by one I jettisoned them from my daily life due to their childish behavior and insistence that I give them more of me. As a result I am truly alone now and feel adrift without a rudder. The silence is deafening and sometimes overwhelming. I cannot see myself going through the dating ritual or even contemplating another partner. I spent so much time as a "we" that I no longet know how to be a "me".

I am so relieved to read your posts here. I was beginning to feel like a complete weirdo! I have been widowed now for nearly 17 years. My late husband, who died at 57 when I was 54, was the love of my life and my soulmate. He said to me, when he was very ill, that I should find someone else and I told him I wouldn't - and I meant it! He was the very best and, for all the occasional loneliness, I would sooner be alone that with someone who meant less to me that he did. I have a happy and full life. But tonight, a very good friend of mine who lost her husband just over a year ago, introduced me to her new boyfriend who she had met on the internet. I am, of course, very happy for her and I really hope the relationship brings her joy. But it has left me feeling like a real exception! Am I totally alone in not wanting another relationship? I do hope not...

My husband said if I predeceased him he would never marry again. He did say that he would probably have a companion but that's about it. Well, he has been gone 5 months now and I can say without a shadow of a doubt, I have a husband and I'm still married to him and love and miss him very much so it's a definate NO for me.

I don't want that pain of possibly losing another person in the form of hubby..boyfriend or lover. Just can't worry about someone's baggage or history...im sure they don't want mine.

I think it would be good to have a companion , someone around my age to talk to about life and things that's been through the same then we would both understand the part of us that will always miss our soul mates I don't think anyone would wish a person to be lonely in life . Sometimes , it seems , there's no fun in doing things on your own I don't think I would ever be interested in getting re married

It's been 8 months since my husband died, he was 82, I was his second wife, he my only, I was 23 when we married, my entire adult life with him. Ups and downs but mostly ups, he was my true soulmate and best friend as well as lover, he surprised me with so many wonderful adventures, paintings, short trips to nature, 3 major moves, L.A., Seattle, Bay Area where I plan to stay. I figured at 68 I was done with relationships, no one would want me. I am a dancer, yoga student, in good shape and fairly attractive and SO alone without the love of my life who no man could ever replace I decided to keep him deep in my heart and reach out for friendship and human touch, first professional massage, then went on line and posted a wish list for someone different than my husband so I could keep my memories private and not be reminded by someone who looked like him or was interested in the same things. I found an amazing man who does not want a full time relationship and lives in a nearby town, I am also not ready for a full time anything. But it is wonderful to be hugged and told you're beautiful and that life is worth living even with all the grief still there slowly releasing into happiness. I still cry a lot and am in therapy, it can get better. But I will never marry again. I am keeping his name and proud to have been in a wonderful life with him for 46 years.

I miss my husband, I am lonely for him alone, no one else could ever take his place, he was my soulmate. I was married before but I married the first time because I was lonely and I learned my lesson I wouldn't want to make that same mistake again, its not fair to yourself or the other person. I think once you recognize your true soulmate, you also realize that there is no one else. I had dated quite a bit before I married the first time so I know the difference, my first husband and I related in many ways but not in every way, once you've known that, there is no other and you really don't want anyone else, it is better to be alone. I am 68 years old, for me there are no doubts, I have no desire to be with anyone else but I respect the choices of others to marry if they are sure they are marrying for love rather than loneliness, marrying out of loneliness is marrying for the wrong reason.

I have no desire to meet anyone else,and when younger i had no desire then as well after my first husband fell to his death. It just happened..and i figure if i am meant to be with anyone else it will happen again. I am trying to understand my life right now and its too complicated for even me. For me that is the last thought on my mind..being alone as i am not i have whats left of me.

I don't plan on looking for a new mate, we had 42 years together, some bad, most very good

Does anyone realize that this original post was from 2009? Still, it's a valid question whatever the year. I'm 56 years old and I just lost my husband six weeks ago. Still, this is something that I think about. I know that I can never replace my Dave. Still, I hope that I have a lot of life yet to live and I hope that somewhere down the line there will be someone special that I can live out the rest of my life with. I know my husband would have wanted it that way , just as I would have wanted him to carry on without me should I have passed before him. I have an uncle who met and married a new woman when he was in his 70s. They are very happy together. I don't think that there's an age limit on happiness and love. I very much enjoyed being part of a pair, and I think that I would like that again sometime in the future. Whether or not that's possible is another story. Time will tell. Right now, I'm not anywhere close to even thinking about something like that , but I am open to the possibility of it .
