My loved one was in PA as a Tier 1 sex offender (misdemeanor) and required to be registered for 15 years. He moved to Florida to be with me and it wasn't till 3 months after that we realized his misdemeanor was changed to a felony. The PO says it's because no sex offense is a misdemeanor here! His registry will be for lifetime and he lives in a trailer park of solely S.O.s! We didn't know that when you move to Florida there would be changes.

When I got my house I made sure not to be near a school, a park, daycare but turns out behind my house there is an apt. Complex and they have a pool and because its less than 1000ft from my yard he can't live wth me!
He can't live at my mom's either! He's miserable in this mobile home park and very depressing.
Do not make our same mistake! Florida is horrible!
You will not find work and in Seminole county you have to carry your driver's license as well as a S.O. I.D. card! If you decide to cut someone's grass for work you must inform them you are registered. This has been a challenge and were just praying to be able to move to another state!

My son was accused and took a plea in Floriduh where he spent 30 months in federal. I moved myself and business to Philadelphia a year before his release. That way he had family, a home and a job when he got out. They allowed him to move to PA as soon as he was released.. and I'm so glad I made that move.

NEVER GO TO FLORIDA. In 1998 I foolishly took a plea and spent the next three years in prison. The crime? 15 year old family member helped herself to our booze cabinet. She passed out and when my wife and I got home she vomited all over herself. My wife and I threw her in the shower, of course undressed her and we cleaned her up. The next day she told her boyfriend that I molested her in the shower. The boyfriend told the parents and within 3 hours I was in jail. The truth didn't come out till after I was arrested but it being an election year in Florida the DA wanted to make an example out of me. I went from a corp job to facing 17 years behind bars. My lawyer was worthless, ten grand got me a simple plea deal. The lawyer and the DA would let the judge decide my fate. The plea was 0-5 years period. Since I had no record, the lawyer assured me time served in the county jail which was about 6 months, since my bail was 75 grand cash only I was stuck there. This is Florida they are NUTS. I go to see the judge...he gives me 3 years and to top that off plus 7 years probation...Three years pass and withing 6 months they ask where I will be moving when I get out I told them back to Jax Florida. I am not even out yet and my wife comes home and she found a sign in the yard stating a sex offender will be moving here. She called the police and they told her is she removes it she will be fined. At that point I had to scramble and we got an interstate compact to move my probation to New Jersey. I get out come to NJ and could not be happier. All you have to do is see the probation officer twice a month and go to counseling. You have to register once a year, but your not publicly visible on any registry if your a Tier One Offender. Also since my crime was not committed in Jersey when the employer does a background check it came up negative. Granted that was back in 2001. This year I will petition the state to remove me all together since its been 15years. Last January my mom past away in Port Charlotte, I had to suck it up and go back there. I had to stay there for two weeks to attend to her affairs. I had to register with these clowns again. They came to my moms house and the put flyers in mail boxes in a one block area. Total humiliation all over again and to make to worse no one wants to buy my moms house now. Been sitting there for a year now...cause a sex offender lived there....so stupid right? Repeat NEVER GO TO FLORIDA..oh..I also just found out Carnival Cruise and Royal Caribbean also will not let Sex Offenders on their ships...another humiliation this past Christmas. Just to make matters worse I just found out my PASSPORT has been revoked and I have to reapply and they will put a large SEX OFFENDER stamp on the inside cover. Its the new INTERNATIONAL MEGANS Law...thank you OBAMA....so in closing..NEVER TAKE A PLEA deal....you will regret it the rest of your life. FIGHT for your right to be heard in court......dont let them trick you.

Does anyone know how South Carolina is for sex offenders?

My fiance and I live in Arizona (Maricopa County). He is on lifetime probation. He never served prison time so he is not on parole. He has been on probation for 4 years now. Last year I unexpectedly became pregnant and we had our son in October. Probation made me move out with my son the moment I came home from the hospital with him and for the first month gave him no contact with our son. His offense is not with a family member or males. We are now allowed to be altogether three times a week for 6 hours at a time. We petitioned the court to be able to live together again and today found out we were denied. I’m hoping someone out there might be or know someone in a similar situation where they had a child WHILE on probation. It was so foreign to even the probation officers to have a probationer have a child while on probation that they didn’t even know what to do so my son has been deprived a chance to be with his father while everyone figures out what to do. I’m hoping there is a state out there that we could move to and be a family again.

Here are two prime examples of why a registrant needs to stay the hell away from Florida. I realize some registrants are forced to stay in Florida b/c of probation requirements and some have family in Florida, but Florida is as toxic to registrants as Kryptonite is to Superman.

If a registrant stays in Florida, the legislators will nit pick and in each legislative session will continue to pass these frivolous and ungodly laws to harass and keep sex offenders out of the state. And since the registry in Florida is considered a civil regulatory scheme to protect the public---and not punitive in nature---- most all of these laws will be retroactive before the date of conviction, so even if a registrant was convicted 15 years ago, any new registration laws would affect him and his life.

This leaves a registrant in Florida sweating blood at the beginning of the legislative session, since any law enacted will affect them as registrants.

Aryanatc my friend's son is getting out of prison in July. She lives in Ohio. Will it be difficult for him to find housing there? Do you know if his parole will be difficult?

Sex offender here. I was convicted for having a 1 night sexual relation with a female I met at a bar. Come to find out a week later when the sheriff showed up at my house she was a 16 year old run away, I was 21 at the time That was almost 20 years ago. I have done extensive research into where the best place in the country a sex offender with a family could live with out being treated like a social leper by everyone around them. Mix that in with the legal climate , State SORA rules and local megans laws variations etc etc. I have some up with 2 states that for the most part live and let live if you can get past the fact that you're going to have to register no matter what.

1. New York State : If you're just wanting to live with your family with out having to worry about residency restrictions, New York State is the place to be as a sex offender who lives with his or her family. Now mind you not all cities / Jurisdictions in New York State are going to be friendly to you ,Not all neighbors are going to be immediately welcoming, finding a place to live can be very difficult in New York State, however there are some small cities across the state that the rental climate isn't completely anti sex offender and the rent prices are reasonable. You just have to look for them. We all know that money can be tight sometimes as an offender. Job opportunities are very slim anywhere you go so living costs are a huge factor. One city that stands out from the others is Jamestown New York. It's about at friendly as a small city can be. There are some jobs, Some opportunities even for sex offenders lots of cheap rentals and for the most part people around there don't bother other people for the dumb things they did in the past. Its a very live and let live as long as you don't step on my lawn environment. The winters are cold but the summers are nice and there are a lot of things to do around the area.


2: Oregon State : This is a very liberal state must the same as New York as far as the social climate it and the people are very friendly to just about anyone, however it is really expensive and I mean expensive. but if you have the money to live there its not a bad place to be. There has been a mass influx of out of state offenders moving to Oregon lately. This issue has been on their news from time to time but I'm not seeing any real movement from the politicians in that state to prevent more from doing the same. So I would say move at your own risk.

3: The rest of the country isn't that great. I know I've tried. and like everyone else has said here STAY AWAY FROM Florida or the bible belt states.

We moved from Floriduh to PA, which I'm very thankful for. Instead of a lifetime on the registry he has 15 years... altho laws change all the time, The supreme court here said residency restrictions is unconstitutional my son can live where he wants. But Supreme court here just said the registry is a punishment and my son was about to get off early, they changed it last week.
It's a political year so everyone is bulking up on their sex offender laws for votes

So Christian of the Bible belt in their forgiveness. They will to it in the end.

Nak, what did they change last week? Did I miss something? I know the Legislature, passed a bill to keep some offenders on that would have gotten off due to a loop hole.
