Do you believe in spaking?

This will probably become a stern discussion but it is one that should be explored.

After my experience in dealing with kids in my field of work I have come to the conclusion that spanking is very necessary. Kids need to learn that there are consequences for their actions. It would also teach respect because, unfortunately, fear causes respect.

I am not talking about the Old Fashion ass whuppin' where they hurt the child. I am talking about a legal spanking where the child's feelings are the only thing that are hurt.

Spanking is legal! I have had kids call me before on their parents because they are spanked. As long as the child is not permamently injured the spanking is fine. When they start using things that will hurt the child then it is a problem.

Sorry parents, but from what I have seen, with most kids Time Outs don't work all of the time.

So I say that "Spare the Rod and spoil the child" is very true. What are your thoughts?

both my sister and I were spanked.

Now I was raised in a very very strict house hold and my dad believed in whooping our asses. It wasn't often but it happened and it wasn't pretty.

I do think he regrets some of the spankings he did on me (I was the naughty child) but I don't really... I regret the bruises but not the action as I KNOW I deserved most of them!!

I grew up really in the South. Texas to be specific. They still have corporal punishment in schools. And I think that is a good thing. Kids dont act up really in class, especially athletes, because for athletes, the head coach gave the pops. One guy wore a freakin batting glove (for intimidation purposes). Kids also say yes sir, and yes maam, no matter who the adult is.

Now, I am not advocating whooping a kids ass just for the hell of it, and there are those that definitely take it too far. But on more than one occasion, the kids I grew up with say "no way I am doin that, my dad would whip my ass" and we stayed out of serious trouble.

I may not have said it the way you did, but I do agree. I taught for 14 years, spanked my own kids when they were little and I was spanked as a child, too. I do believe, under the right conditions, there is a place for it.

I don't think that hitting a child, or anyone, is the right way to resolve any issue. When they are tiny you can restrain them from hurting themselves or others - that is the extent of the physical intervention I am going to have with my children. When I touch them, it is going to be a loving or protective touch, not a punishing touch. My children are well-behaved and loving. Unless a child is emotionally disturbed or has some other serious issues, talking and at worst, stern talking and frowning ought to be sufficient. If I yell or want to hit, I am failing at my task and I need to try something different or have a time out myself.

Oh hell yeah! Bring Corpral punishment back in the schools to get the classrooms back.

When I was young the kids on the bus were being bad. The principle got onto the bus and all the girls in the front of the bus started crying because they were scared that they would get spanked. That doesn't happen anymore and these kids don't have respect.

But after reading.. Yes I agree heave, spanking is okay as long as its used correctly and with good intentions.

Heave, spankings don't teach respect, they teach fear and intimidation. There's a huge difference. Kids will still act out, they'll just find sneakier ways to do it.

There are better, albeit harder, ways to teach children discipline.

Yes, I spanked my kids. They are too old now for it and have been raised in such a way that their behavior doesn't require such punishment.

There should be a healthy amount of fear of the parents. You can't be a child's buddy all of the time. I was scared of my father when I was growing up and we are now very close. It was necessary to keep law and order.

From my experience, after the first few spankings, all my kids had to hear was....you're gonna get a spanking....and they would behave like nothing else.
