i dispise politics, but love wine. i'm american and i think that the gov't thinks its shit don't stink. as on a more personal note, i prefer to talk to others about themselves and not their gov't. i respect my neighbors, whether they are next door or across the seas. and i really didnt want to post. but i did anyway.

This is a bit of an aside, but America is sooo widely diverse culturally (like I'm sure many places are, but I think our immigrant history makes it more so) and there's been a lot of talk in this election as to what the 'Real America" is.. Palin says it's the Small Town folk, and implying that the coasts and big cities are elitest, unAmerican, etc. Her hometown people talked like 9/11 happened in Wasilla or something!
It's like "fuck you snotty New Yorkers" until they want to pimp 9/11.

To add yet another unsolicted tangent, how do Europeans feel about Christopher Hitchens (and that silly french dude - Levy) who pretty much support a sort of American Exceptionalism and say any criticism of it is fringe left. Does that stuff carry weight over there?

Don't know what to say...I'm Canadian...but if people accept Sarah Palin as "Small Town" they're screwed (I thing she's been used, by the way).

Should say I "think" she's been used - and I'm go Obama! Doesn't make a difference though - just a lowly Canadian here.

one thing I'd like to add is that the imperalist impulse isn't something America invented...you know 'British EMPIRE, Ottoman EMPIRE"..etc. While I hate and protest a lot of interventionism (most all, like I don't think we needed air raids in Kosovo) I kind of get a little irritated when people act like imperialism is something new.
It's just that it's unfortunate that democracy gets used as a cover for it. But we're not the first and only to rape & pillage and all the rest. (literal example: The Rape of Nanking) I think we just have the most massive, frightening military complex ever assembled...that and a few other problems...

She was definitely picked to get the Hillary vote and the blue collar vote- but she's so arrogant, she seems to think it was her accomplishments and insight. The GOP has gotten frustrated with her trying to speak independently; they don't want her to show how stupid she is. She also attacks McCain's positions occaisionally...

yep, it's looking that way. Apparently some in the GOP are really pissed at him for it; but in the beginning it looked like a sharp move. People really liked her at first. She was a media star, briefly.
