Well, Afghanistan is a UN mission - and not a peace keeping one, and they haven't run from that - despite little success.

UN presence as Peacekeepers does not allow for them to take part in internal conflict, but to protect citizens.

If they can stop the killing and injustice they are welcome to it. But if their policy fails. We will be there to take up the slack. That is if we can. Our Govt is lead by the people. People are lazy. But still we will follow their will.

OK.. I guess thats enough for now. This really isnt the right board to be talking about it. Im more interested in helping others in the battle against bipolar. Im much more qualified for that. altho i am american, i would like the "non-americans" here to confirm this for me - whether i got it or am talking outof my ass - but PW, the "logic" (& i use that term loosely to merely refer to a rhetorical device) you present is why i think "non-americans" - i.e.: the rest of the world - hates us. it's what's called "Exceptionalism" - the myth of American Exceptionalism. the idea that somehow as americans we are better - our purpose more pure, more egalitarian, more unsullied & unspoilt - almost as if we are annointed by God.

Hmm that is tough question. I am in love with an American, but she is very English and in my view untypical. Your country is so big and varied in many ways. Can you compare a man from Alabama with a woman from New York, or a Claifornian gay man with a football, loving, beer drinking mysoginist from Texas. So its like a saying we have in UK America is like the Curates egg, good in parts.

interesting thing, tho, about American Exceptionalism - something that should give all of you non-americans some pause, if not reason to fear - the american electorate seems to demand that our leaders believe in it. its like a litmus test for political leadership in america - do you believe that America is somehow greater that anywhere else on Earth? if, as a politician, you say "no" - well, sayonara political career!

you can see it now in our presidential election - Palin cruises on this question, & may in fact win because everyone knows that she whole-heartedly believes america has a Godly purpose here on Earth. when someone like my state's own Michelle Bachmann asks whether Obama is anti-american, what she is in part refering to is "does he believe in AMerican Exceptionalism". there are doubts...
