This community is dedicated to those who have lost a husband, wife, or partner. Anything is open for discussion here, with the hope that we can focus on grief, bereavement, life after loss, and continuing on after a great loss.
Hello. My wife passed away unexpectedly before Christmas last year. She came down for a midnight snack and had a heart attack. She was already dead as my son and I attempted to administer CPR with the help of the 911 operator. We would have been married thirty years this October. In September of next year, we would have known each other for fifty years, having met in fourth grade. We went to grade school, high school, and college together, but did not fall in love until after college. We moved back to our hometown and all of our friends were interconnected. She was well known and respected because she had helped so many people.
I have spent the last six months, doing what one does in these situations, paperwork, cleaning out the house, more paperwork, more cleaning until last month I realized that I was alone. It was then that I took notice that friends had seemed to abandon me. That I was no longer being asked to meet up for dinner or for drinks. It felt odd and it still does. Someone has told me that this is a natural defense for them, that being with me invokes memories and sadness, so to avoid that pain they avoid me. That makes sense to me but does nothing for my well being.
I don't mind living alone, but it would be nice to just go to dinner with someone or to a movie. I have reached out to people and the response seems to always be the same. At first, they agree that it would be a good idea to meet and then it is put off. I have never felt so alone and I don't know what to do.

Today I feel grateful. Grateful for my dog Blue (Blue Jean Baby Queen, Prettiest girl I've ever seen). Grateful I'm still kickin'. Grateful I'm finally taking responsibility for my health. Grateful I own my home. Grateful for good friends and neighbors who watch over me. Grateful to God for His everlasting love and patience with me. Grateful I survived the 10 years since my wife of 30 years...

Try to go to grief counseling in your area, as it has helped me and in September I will be going to group therapy. Hugs
Well, we can relate so share as much and as often as needed we will be here.
I have reached out to lady friends, (I would be unable to navigate single male friends in person right now) but the harsh reality is, everyone has a life full of obligations.
Music is helpful, but I have to cherry-pick the material.
You know, the thing is, I don't think anyone can imagine this level of aloneness at all. It has to happen to you first.
Last week an older widow, my friends' MIL, passed away. She had what Drs labeled as "failure to thrive". I think all the changes since her husbands death added up to extinguish her will to live. I offered (through my friend) to go spend time with her, but I did not know her personally. What she needed was family with her on a daily basis. By the time her health became endangered it was too late.
We have all heard of studies where infants fail to thrive due to lack of physical touch, etc. but no one considers what widowed people experience, particularly those who were together for so many decades.. Absence of people you love is a traumatic & devastating kind of hell.
own clicks and since I am a widow I find women that are married really don't want me in their group because they feel threatened and I just feel like telling them I married the only man I ever loved and I certainly am not looking for a replacement. I always told my husband God threw the mold away when he made him and I know there's no one that will ever measure up to him or take his place. Life goes on as hard as it is my pain physician asked me how I am doing and I told him I am just trying my best to put one foot in front of the other. He was also my husbands Doctor. Our appointments were always together so he was aware of how I feel. Life is very lonely and I have also shut the world out. I do hope for your sake your
friends will start coming around again but I honestly don't have an answer since I am in the same situation. I think I am going to force myself to get involved with a
church and see if that will help.
