This year we'll begin transitioning the retreat away from a "healing retreat" to more of a "celebration gathering," based on feedback that I've gotten from you over the years now. I have one thing to bring up that I need honest input on.
I've been contacted by a mother and daughter who want to attend; the daughter is a teen who conceived a child following her rape a couple of years ago. The mother has asked whether they could also bring the child with them because he's part of the experience too, and mom thinks it would actually be very healing for the daughter to experience this kind of positive event. Mom (Grandmom, now) has said that she would take care of the grandson during activities so he would not be present during "our" time, not be underfoot. The mom/grandmom is pretty motivated to help for her daughter's sake.
I kinda see the reason for her asking this, and I don't have any personal concerns or issues, except to ask for your input too. What would you think of having this child there, given that the child would be kept away from our scheduled activities?

Agreed Heptet. I don't think that is the answer to this...my opinion

It's not so much that it feels "hollow" to me, it's that it feels like yet another one of those issues where good ol' Matt's just not going to be able to find that one, rare, sparkling outcome that solves all problems and makes everyone happy with him--such is my lot in life *grin!*--so given what we have to work with, it IS positive.

But this issue wasn't about Matt, at all. It was about welcoming a fellow survivor that has a healing need that is different than what we've had to deal with. I thought it would be a good experience for all of us...truly I did.

Actually, it was the choice that the family made on their own--totally regardless of any of this.

I agree Judy I think that there is such a diverse group of people that come together in stillwater, and we learn so much from each other. I think that we as a group would have a lot to offer this girl and she and her child would bring a lot to us as well. That is just my opinion.

Whoops sorry Matt didn't see your reply before I hit send!

Oh, I agree Megan--I think we certainly could, and would! But it's a longstanding tradition that we grumble and argue all the way to success, and then we all go, "Hey, that actually turned out pretty good!"
