3 dead at my school-send strength

I got feedback just now that folks reaction to my PTSD talk yesterday at that big Boston was strong and appreciative. I had no idea, since I had to run to the Boston airport for my flight to DC right away. That was nice, but while I was away this weekend tragedy struck my college.
When I got home I found out that my own work continues. I'm honored that a student in my death and dying class came to my office this a.m. after class crying. Im not glad that he was in grief but that he thought I was a shoulder he could lean on. Over the weekend his best friend and 2 others died driving drunk into a tree. He's devastated, so we made a plan for him to do 3 things in the next 24 hours and get back to me. I hope he'll take me up on my offer to refer him to a counselor through the college.
Thanks for your support for this weekend, and send good thoughts re this student of mine who's leaning on my shoulder about this loss of 3 lives that my school is grieving today.

Hey all, i know its been quite awhile since i posted on here. Its been a summer all right. Its been something else........... You know how they say not to open the can of worms? Well a few months ago i decided to find out what my due date would have been for my first baby, the one conceived by r***. My baby would have been due on March 4th of 2006. They would be 20 years old. I was R**** on June...

Glad your talk went well, but so sad for th eloss of life...
glad too that your talk went so well, more hugs
Quite a day at my little college.
Though I can see how the other two events seem to override any good feelings. So hard to celebrate in the faces with sorrow.
I think the police were ready for some fall out, but maybe not that kind.
Hugs and you do deserve a pat on the back for the lecture and the support to your student.

To be with his bro's young widow and baby and start
a life review of good memories of him (short and long term work)
To be with someone else every night when his bro would
call him after work as suicide prevention (short term work)
To ask to be a pall bearer in his bro's funeral to do one
last thing for his friend who died (long term work)
If you think of anything else, let me know. It has to be simple and concrete, he's a mess right now.
Thanks.
It wasn't easy.
I don't think that there's any way out but through. Nor do I think that there is any one way of getting through it.
My dad died when I was 22. At the time he was the ONLY family I was ever close to. (Oh I grew up with both parents, and my mother and sister are still alive to this day...but my dad was the only person I was attached to in the least.) It was, and forever will be the greatest loss I'll ever have.
And I've twice thought my kids were dead. When my daughter was 3, we went to Myrtle Beach and she went missing. Eight adults couldn't find her. I walked up and down the beach crying and planning her funeral. The plus side is...I now know just how I'd like her funeral to be...but that's another story...
The thing is. Death isn't a contest. There IS no better way. No worse way. Sudden, 6 months, 5 years. Good and bad things about death being drawn out... Trauma, or not. Crime or not.
A friend's mother died when her accelerator got stuck. Here one day...gone, literally, the next.
I don't think that there's anything wrong with "being a mess". I was a mess when my dad died.
The ONE thing that I did for me, that had meaning was: I walked from my house to the cemetery with my dog. My dog, my first born, was just a puppy back them. From a distance, we watched them dig the grave with a backhoe and put the coffin in. It was only when I walked over that they saw me there.
Oh and my dog peed on the grave. No symbolism. Just life going on. So maybe it was symbolism...for me. I'm atheist and there's peace and meaning in that. I've long given up on theists understanding.
I did a lot of crap for my mom. Things that I was "told" to do. I did it. I hated it. I put in my duty. She was pissed that I didn't invite her to walk to the cemetery. Oh well...
Walking to the cemetery was for me. If I ever get back to Pittsburgh, I'll probably sprinkle my pup's ashes on my dad's grave. Maybe not. He lives in my heart, and that's enough.
He'll either find that "thing" for him...or he won't. It may end up being something you suggest, or it could be something that would have meaning only to him. It's not easy...and that's okay.
Just my two cents...
