Phobia Support Group
A phobia (from the Greek "fear"), is a strong, persistent fear of situations, objects, activities, or persons. The main symptom of this disorder is the excessive, unreasonable desire to avoid the feared subject. When the fear is beyond one's control, or if the fear is interfering with daily life, then a diagnosis under one of the anxiety disorders can be made.
Fear of clowns/dolls
Fear of elevators
makes me a little germ phobic but it's because of fear of the norovirus or any illness that might be me throw up.
I only take cabs and go to ground-floor places. But I'm afraid of the cab being on a highway also.
I'm curious if the rest of you avoid your phobias? I haven't been on the subway or travelled in 2 years since having this.
freeways
long drives
illness
sleeping in my bed
2. Doctors. I'm terrified, petrified of them. This is not good, because I have a medical condition which I am not dealing with and not going in for my blood tests because I am so petrified. I think this is tied to childhood sexual abuse, because the person who abused me to used to tell me that the doctor checked him so he had to check me to make sure I wasn't dying. Now I always think I am going to die if I go to the doctor. I'm somehow phobic of dentists for this reason, too.
3. Dying. I'm always convinced that every lump, bump and sniffle is a symptom of something that will shortly kill me.
There's probably more phobias, but I can't think of them right now.
Bathrooms, wasps and being like my mother... Bathrooms are my worst fear.. >.
My main one that runs my life (to the point that everyone who knows me knows this...) claustrophobia. One counselor once told me this phobia was not about the enclosed spaces but about control...we never did any work around it though (nor do I see myself doing ant in vivo or any other exposure therapy...no way could I even consider getting close to an elevator)!
But others that are definite- every day some how or another a part of my life (not necessarily in a debilitating way but, I think about them or have some "way" to deal with them whether healthy or unhealthy)
Vomit-especially in public places and/or not contained (like when ppl throw up on rides, in restaurants or bars, in cabs or on busses, on the sidewalk or playing fields.I am freaking out just typing these words...)
Dirty places, like old dirty houses or sheds... I cannot even touch things that are dirty-which makes cleaning a challenge
Bugs inside my house- I have grown to accept that they are outside and I can be ok to sit out to get some sun or be at the beach but when I see ants or fruit flies in my house, I come undone!!
Germs...a very common one
Phobias are really hard to deal with
