A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus, usually done by a gynecologist. Hysterectomy may be total (removing the body and cervix of the uterus) or partial (also called supra-cervical). Although there are conservative alternatives, hysterectomy is performed for uterine fibroids, pelvic pain, pelvic relaxation, heavy or abnormal menstrual bleeding, and cancer.
i have always had very heavy periods, now its gotten so bad. i go in for a uterine abliation tomorrow. they say sometimes it works but sometimes it doesnt. my doctor doesnt want to do a hysterctomy, i was wondering should i get a second opinion?

I'm horrified! I knew my insurance would go up due to getting a new car but I didn't expect it to go up over $2,000. I did have an accident with the snow/ice in the winter. I had heavy fibroids but I chose to leave things alone and not mess with things. Fibroids are common in most women over age 35. They will eventually go away. Yes, it was difficult to deal with, but I chose not to do any procedures and now I am all good.
You can also go on birth control, not for controlling pregnancy, but they really lessen periods a lot.

Did you ask your doctor why he/she doesn't want to do a hysterectomy and what did she/he say about their reasons?
The old school thinking was just take the uterus out, it is not needed. But modern thinking is doing as little surgical removals as possible to protect the hormonal balance of the woman and to protect the structures that hold up the bladder, and vagina. The removal can also damage the ovaries and put the woman into instant menopause. They say they will leave the ovaries so you have hormones but often the ovaries stop working after hysterectomy. If your doctor told you all this, I'd say you have a caring and thoughtful doctor.
Two other considerations: It could also be that your doctor makes more money doing ablations AND it could be that your insurance company will not authorize payment for the hysterectomy until lesser or other treatments or procedures are first tried.
Your health in general is also a consideration.
