he was restraining his 5 yr old daughter
Hi everyone,
I was at my boyfriend's house last night, and brought over homemade dough for everyone to make their own pizzas (including my 10yr old daughter). He was mostly outside with his friend, while my daughter and I were inside helping his daughter make her pizza etc. Later that night his daughter was snuggling with myself and my daughter and he scooped her up wanting her to snuggle with him bc he said he was cold. He wanted to be close with her, which is fine. However, she didn't. She wanted to hang with "the girls" as she put it.
However, he wouldn't let her go and kept holding her on his lap to the point where her emotions escalated and she was screaming, hitting and trying to get out of his hold, and at one point said he was hurting her, which he said he wasn't. This went on for about 15 minutes and it was all I could do to keep quiet about it. Both my daughter and I looked over a couple of times but said nothing, as I didn't feel it was my place to do so, being his child and home.
After finally letting her go, she came over and sat in a chair close to me heaving from crying and very distraught. I wanted to take her in my arms and comfort her, but tried to remain neutral and put my arm around her. He then got mad again saying he'd had enough as he turned her bedroom light on telling her it was time for bed, and she said her mom let her stay up with her and watch movies...she was still heaving from crying before, still very upset at being held against her will. My daughter piped in trying to strike a nuetral deal, for her to give him a hug and him letting her watch the rest of the movie with us. But his daughter didn't want to go near him. He then picked her up anyway and brought her into his room (in an attempt to put her to sleep now) where she cried again for about 10 minutes and to the point of saying over and over "I want my mommy!"
It was very upsetting for me to be in a situation like this because if it were my daughter I wouldn't want her restrained against her will like that and to the point where she was screaming, hitting feeling physically hurt and clearly in distress. And because I didn't feel it was my place to say anything, I told my daughter we were leaving. I couldn't stand hearing it anymore. It was hard to listen to.
But once we got our coats and boots on, they both came out, and she came over to me for comfort asking "aren't we having a sleepover?" She was still very upset and I stood there caught in the middle of leaving and him seeing us ready to go (we were supposed to spend the night) and her now wanting us to stay. My daughter wanted to stay to be there to comfort her, but he mentioned something about me going to warm up my car (I guess providing an out for whatever reason). So then I felt guilty for leaving this distraught little girl who seem to need us for comfort. But he told her to go get something and we made our way out.
It didn't seem he was intentionally trying to cause her distress but rather oblivious to the fact that he was. He seems a little jealous at other times too when she wants to sit on my lap and sit with my daughter and I and has done this before, but not to this extent. It was awful to see her being held against her will and to the point of this level of distress. It was so disturbing that I had to leave last night at 11:00 at night, and still is. It was awful to witness and not be able to do anything. And I can't imagine being physically held against my will like that regardless of my feelings and actions, like his daughter was.
What are your thoughts?

I'm feeling down,, and got alot on my mind right now. I got grief going on, on top my depression and anxiety and now I got to worry about somewhere to live since I can't afford living here since my mom passed. So many bad things have happened since my mom passed. One thing after another it seems. Yesterday our fence fell from a storm that hit, had to call someone to prop it up. Thank...
PE, I agree. That was one of the things that struck me...that it's a message to her that it's okay for her to be physically restrained by a man, regardless of her feelings.
I agree that he lacks parenting skills, but there's more to his behavior than just that. To allow a child to cry for 15 minutes because she doesn't want to snuggle? He's forcing his will on her, and probably forces his will on others too. It's a power struggle with a 5 year old. It's not like she was doing something she knows she's not supposed to, breaking rules, being bratty and crying for 15 minutes because she's not getting a toy she wants - she was trying to assert her 5 year old self and communicate her wishes. We all want to be heard and respected. She was shown that her wishes don't matter by the most important man in her life. There's only one person I know who I could imagine doing that - my sister's estranged husband. He took his pre-teen and teenaged daughters to court because he claimed they were emotionally abusing him. Once the girls spoke up and told their side of the story, the judge threw him out of the courtroom. He emotionally and financially abused his 5 daughters their entire lives. He's out of their lives now, and they are much better off. I hope this little girl's mom remains viligant.
The good news is that I was able to get a hold of the mom and talked on the phone with her tonight about it. She was very appreciative of the information and also said her daughter doesn't want to go to his house during visiting times... I'm just happy to have been able to be a voice for her and that her mom is going to respect my wishes for anonymity in the situation and will talk to her daughter about it and take time to decide on her actions in the situation.
however ... how does a man learn to be a father and what to do when he is not allowed to see his kids??
This incident is a reflection of what our society has become. It is sad, because now this girl's life will be changed forever . More courts ahead.
Also, I thought he had other kids with his ex wife who were older. I didn't think this was his first foray into parenting but maybe I have that mixed up.
I'm not saying he's abusive. I do think he sounds stunted. I do think there are likely things he has not been forthcoming about. Of course, what do I know; I'm just speculating.
If it were an isolated incident, I'd understand what you're saying, but these are the kinds of situations that warrants court action and intervention.
rmb, I agree about a history being there with him, including the abuse with his son years ago that I mentioned that I only recently learned about, and he has a short fuse as well.
Regarding his parenting skills being sub par...he is emotionally abusive (insults, put downs etc) when he gets upset and regarding my last post above, he twisted his son's arm to get him to cooperate with a secret he wanted him to keep from the school (this incident was years ago and told to me from the little girls mom when we talked)...this is what I know about, and after only knowing him for almost 9 months. But we're not together anymore.
Have you noticed any of that behavior towards you ?
If it's ordered through the court so be it..... I have no idea what's gone on between this mother and father..... A step father is hopefully a good role model and support however he's no relation to the kids.... He's the mothers' new husband
If this can be repaired and the father can learn some good skills re coping, patience, support etc he's very important in these kids lives and will be for all of his life
My concern from other posts you've put up is parental alienation and I hope that he will do all that he has to in order to be a good father to his children
I hope that both of these parents will do what's in the best interest of their children...... Children feeling abandoned by their parent is one of the most serious forms of child abuse that there is... I hope he will do all that he can to heal this....xo
