Is there a niche for "lack of motivation"? My GS 13, has none. He has no desire to improve in any way. He just doesn't seem to care if he does well at anything, not even his supposedly beloved video games. He plays, incessantly I might add, but he doesn't really TRY to get any better. Given a chore to do, he will do the bare minimum to try to say that he did it, and have to do it over (usually multiple times) until he gets it done right. And I'm referring to simple stuff, like picking up limbs and sticks out of the yard so that it can be mowed or washing dishes that don't have food stuck to them. His school grades were excellent this year (home school), but he never put any real effort into it, it was too easy for him, but his grades weren't such that they will move him up an extra grade, because he didn't put the effort in to get the best that he could. He has no DRIVE, no will to succeed. I'm at a total loss how to fix this.

My oldest GK will be 8 years old on July 1st. He was 6 when he was first moved into my care. His sisters were 3 and 8 months. 5 and 2 1/2 now. They have yet to hit the hormonal/cultural confusion of adolescence, but they frequently dig in their heels and refuse any and all suggestions offered. Their child psychologist suggested I look at those incidents as part of the "Attachment Disorder" which is so common among foster children, regardless of whether they are in Kinship Foster Care or "The System."
My current handling of the phenom is to back off of whatever agenda I am trying to sell them and shift my focus to building their self-esteem and sense of security. So far, so good. I believe I can know when I have succeeded when they let me lead them through whatever process they were refusing when they hit their resistance streak.
But that is me and every grand family is even more unique than the mainstream individuals. Steadying support while you find what works for your grand family.
