Family Issues Support Group
Family issues is a huge range that go from minor conflict to major misbehaviour and even abuse on the part of individual members of the family occur. Whether you feel you are in a dysfunctional family or you're dealing with a very specific issue, this is the place to talk about it and find others who might be going through the same thing.
Hi All!
I am new here to Daily Strength. I would like some input from some of you as to whether this is the right group for what I am seeking for. Please feel free to give me any input or suggestions.
Quick summary. My family of origin/family I was raised as a child in, a family of 11 kids, was filled with emotional and sexual abuse. My dad was the primary emotional abuser. My mom was mostly an "absent" parent, at least emotionally and protection from the abuses. I have processed much of that and recognize that much of who both of them were, is as a result of multigenerational abuses. The sexual abusers were also family members, who were also likely acting out as a result of their own emotional and sexual abuse. I can deal with that.
I believe I acted out as a child as a result of the emotional and sexual abuse that I had been a victim to. As a result, I admit my childhood behavior was troubled at best. I see it now as that I was trying to be heard, and not knowing how to reach out for help, acting out was the only time I was "heard" even if negatively heard.
I have dealt with much/most of that childhood drama and trauma. I have a successful career, a loving wife, kids that I have good relationships with, and love being called "papa" by my grandkids. So in some ways, it almost seems silly to be dealing with what I am currently dealing with.
After years of frustration, after years of continuing to be blamed for anything that doesn't go right in the family, after years of my family judging me negatively in ways that absolutely frustrated and even angered me because I didn't feel like that is who I am, I feel like I came to a realization that my siblings seemed to have learned negative behavior toward me, and judgment about me, from my parents. My wife started pointing out little things that she was seeing in regard to my family relationships. She reffered to the way I was spoken to and treated as being "bullied". Based on previous work done to overcome childhood trauma, I call it "emotional abuse". It is so similar to the way I feel like I was treated, spoken to, and judged as a child.
Here again, I think I have done well to accept that they are continuing to act their disfunctional family roles. So, I can recognize that, associate with those that are not emotionally abusive, and literally ignore those that are abusive. My wife is a great resource and support in that. I really don't care about having a relationship with my siblings, if they are going to continue to walk all over me and not accept the boundaries I set. It hurts, but it hurts worse to allow them to continue the emotional abuse.
So, why am I here? I've done pretty well processing a childhood filled with trauma. I've done well setting boundaries with my siblings and refusing to accept their abuse and judgement. So what's left?
My relationship with my mother. (As a side note, my father has passed away 20 something years ago. We never had a good relationship.) I used to enjoy just talking with my mom on the phone since we live far apart. I often would call her and we could talk for an hour during my commute home. Until recently. My wife was diagnosed with cancer. That also is going well. We have seen a ton of miracles, and at this point, she has no detectable cancer left. Hard, but together we are making it. Early on, I confided in my mom about the diagnosis, and asked her to keep it confidential until we were further into finding out what we needed to do. She broke that confidence and shared the news with siblings that ended up using guilt to try to manipulate my wife and I into traveling to a family reunion during her treatments. I lost trust in my mom. After almost 3/4 of a year, I had a gut feeling that my mom was having negative conversations about me behind my back with my siblings. So, I asked her. She said that for her "health and well being," she avoided the gossip and contention, and asked me to not try to drag her into any disagreement between my siblings and I. That didn't feel right. Something felt "off", so I confronted her again, and she finally admitted "of course I have" and talked about how she was their confidant and they hers. She lied to me about having those conversations. I now see that she is judging me based on those conversations with my family, blaming me for the contention, and mocking me for standing up to the emotional abuse and calling it what it is. She blatently blamed me for the emotional abuse from my father, based on how I acted as a child being a victim of emotional and sexual abuse. She tried to turn herself into the victim because I was calling the abuse what it is. Somehow after lieing to me, judging me based on one side of the story, essentially telling me that I was lieing about the negative actions of my siblings, telling me I was to blame for the actions of my father, the parent/adult in the relationship, somehow she had "tried" to rebuild our relationship and lines of communication. And because I wasn't just ready to let it go and allow her to continue the emotional abuse, somehow she was "Sooo sorry" that I wasn't just pretending it all didn't happen, including what is going on with my siblings, and my childhood as a whole.
I am at a crossroads with this relationship. I miss talking to my mom. I somehow have to decide if having a relationship with her while she is doing all these things is worth it. Or somehow, I need to get her to see the whole picture, so she can rethink her thoughts and actions. Or, I need to separate myself from her in the same way I had to do with some of my siblings. And I don't know if any of those really work. I can't change her. And if she isn't willing to even consider that she may need to rethink things, let alone endeavor to work on our relationship and communication, there is little I can do except try to protect myself.
That's the "summary" as long or short as it may be considered. Am I in the right group?
I am open to input.
Thank you for your time!

Hey all, i know its been quite awhile since i posted on here. Its been a summer all right. Its been something else........... You know how they say not to open the can of worms? Well a few months ago i decided to find out what my due date would have been for my first baby, the one conceived by r***. My baby would have been due on March 4th of 2006. They would be 20 years old. I was R**** on June...

To cut people off in anger only hurts ourselves if I am being honest. To learn to love a damaged person while holding our own internal boundaries and acceptance of how they are, brings us emotional relief. It’s not being a victim, it’s seeing this differently. It’s not allowing abuse. It’s moving past expectations of how life should be and just accepting it to find peace. So we call occasionally and we listen and don’t share our life or secrets. We see them for their own damaged selves and find love anyway, often pity, hopefully grateful we are on a different level of being. We release our chains of expectations and anger, even if justified. Because carrying that burden is killing us. This is about us and our healing.
Emotional abuse can be bullying. I suspect it was both. Bullies want control to make themselves feel better inside about their lives. Bullies inflict pain because they are filled with emotional pain. Need an outlet to spew it on someone else for a little relief. Doesn’t make it right but it helps me to understand so I don’t engage. Please read Life Code, it totally changed me in seeing my family members for what they were. And becoming self protective.
There is this group and one that is pretty active called healthy relationships. Either one can be helpful and welcome to you.
The thing is, we have to come to understanding that we can’t have a healthy relationship with some loved ones but we can still love them and stay open hearted without allowing bullying or emotional abuse or just pain old mean crap. You are on your way, you deserve to love yourself enough to drop the burden of expectations of others or assuming their intent. You alone are escaping the dysfunction of your relatives. If this doesn’t give you some compassion, then think about it. Compassion or empathy is not allowing abuse or giving a pass. It’s freeing us from our chains of anger and wanting love from the damaged ones. Their behavior is not a reflection of your value and worth. It’s a reflection of their internal pain. They may be jealous that you have found healing, typical sometimes.
Not sure I can have a relationship with a “mom” that isn’t a “mom”. It would be easier to not have contact. How do I change the expectation of what/who a “mom” is? Doesn’t sound very easy.
I also agree that you can love your mom and not like a lot of things about her... You know that you really can't trust her.... I imagine she's gone through a lot in life without help to heal
My dad didn't treat us well a lot of the time either so I hear you.....I have lost both of my folks.... If you are able for your sake you may want to keep some contact with boundaries..... Big hug.... I know it hurts and it's hard....
There are several people on the PTSD board here who suffer from complex trauma... It's a good board..... xo
It really isn't easier to have no contact, that is the modern dump anyone who is toxic. There are lasting ramifications to either choice. The choice to learn to accept who she is and how limited she is allows you to grow and mature in your thinking and gain wisdom. The choice to just cut her off keeps us stumped and stuck in the old thinking. How we change our exceptions is a growth and maturity process. We simply decide to not have expectations of this person. Those expectations are our cognitive distortions. People are who they are and how they are. If we can let go of our need to control who they are and how they are, by having expectations that a good mother does X or Y, then we will be happier in this world. We set internal boundaries to not allow abuse, of course. It isn't easy as you said but your choice is to stay angry, stuck, with limited or dysfunctional thinking on the issue. The choice to improve ourselves brings life happiness and allows us to find the joy again instead of stuck in the anger. Some people are so limited that they can't change. They remain in their dysfunctional life patterns until the end. I had to really think about this wisdom from a therapist and I decided I wanted to "do the work" because I didn't want to remain stilted, stunted, stuck until my death. My friend calls it being openhearted and that is something I am working on. It is not natural to me. Spent my life dumping people at times. Being able to love a family member when they can't love us back in a healthy way. That also means having boundaries as needed, and our internal boundaries that help us grow. Best to you.
"We simply decide to not have expectations..." How is this done? I generally admit I have expectations in any relationship. An expectation to not lie to me. An expectation to not blame me for everything. An expectation not to judge me based on the gossip from others. An expectation not to call me a liar when I make a truthful statement. To me, this translates or summarizes into an expectation of the relationship being free from emotional abuse. Boundaries? Setting a boundary carries with it the expectation that the boundary will be honored and respected? Or am I seeing/looking at this the wrong way?
"...being openhearted..." I feel like this is in many ways me. The down side is that with that openheartedness, I seem to feel the hurt/pain more the more I open my heart, which is hard to ignore.
"...stuck in anger." I am not angry at my siblings for all that they are and have done. I hurt for them, almost pity them for being so blind to their own hurt and coping mechanisms. I do recognize that generally they are good people, that hurt in many of the same ways I do. But I don't know how to have a relationship with them, even though I do love them. Much the same with my mom I guess. With this recent recognition of her betrayal, her lies, her judgements, her blame, I don't feel anger, I am hurt by her actions and words, but still love her for the good in her, and want to maintain a relationship, I just don't know how to do that and protect myself from the next similar circumstance.
I guess what I am trying to say is that I see wisdom and truths in the words you are sharing, I am past the anger, but still hurting, and I don't even know what it looks like to set boundaries AND drop expectations, while those emotional abuses continue. And since at this point, I don't even know what it looks like, I am at a loss of how to get there. :(
