I feel so lost. My brother went to prison back in 2010 serving a 15-year sentence. Even if it's been nine years it gets worse every single year.!! I don't know what to do. I'm so lost without him. My brother went to prison when he was around 17. Which basically means that almost half of his life will be Behind Bars. I miss him so much. I can't help it. I feel like nobody can relate. People tell me the same thing over and over and over he'll be fine. He'll come out soon. His time is almost over. But what they don't understand is that when you love and truly care about someone it doesn't matter when they're getting out the point is there in there. They're in a place that's unsafe. They're in a place that nobody cares about them. There is a place where they could get beat up and nobody reports it. I miss him so much. I'm so lost. It was his birthday March 4th and you spent it in a mental institution but not any mental institution but one in prison. You can only imagine how that is. I mean your birthday. He tries to act like he's strong enough to go through it but he's not and I know that because we were closed and I see it what he doesn't know is how much it affects me. And I'll never tell him because it's not fair for him to know what I go through when he has to worry about someone stabbing them in the back or someone going in his cell. I hate prison systems. I hate the fact that someone could be sentenced to 15 years and didn't even kill anybody or even hurt anybody. I miss him so much. Although this sounds crazy. He wants told me that he wanted to commit suicide when he first went in. What I didn't tell him. Is that you should do it and then I'll do it and then we could finally be free. I know it sounds crazy I know I know but being free when someone you love dearly is locked up is probably the worst thing that I've ever been through. And I been raped buy more than one family member growing up, watch my mom get beat up by her stepdad, and a whole bunch of other s***. But nothing and I mean nothing compares to this. This is the worst pain I've ever felt in my entire life. Because it's a pain that is caused because I lost the someone I know in the prison system. I'm scared. But anyway being on this site helps me, I don't know why but it does! Good night and I hope your loved one that is locked up gets out safe and sound

I hope the special bond with your brother has the strength to go many, many special places. Gentle support while you find your way.
I am so sorry you are going through this. Yes, those of us outside suffer. I just learned to trust God at the point I was the most scared. I think it is OK to tell them that you love them and it is hard for you, despite not being the one serving time. Knowing that nothing is going to make you go away was the best I could say. I am sticking with you. At least they know they are remembered and cared about. Yes, the Criminal "Justice" System is a complete mess, especially from the war on drugs. I write letters to people in congress. There are even cops who organize and speak to groups about this. They advocate for treatment, no more prison. I think change is coming but not fast enough. I know not everyone agrees with this but it is my belief that addiction is an illness. I am also a nurse so I see it. -Bless you.
I have become quite the recluse and do not have much support so I do my best to get through it one day at a time even though the sadness gets worse every day. I have started going to the gym again and nothing really motivates me when I am down. having to control your breathing is a great form of meditation when your mind is unable to relax.
I don't believe that any specific thing actually really helps and that we will continue to endure the pain of the system. I could suggest a number of things but you will find the strength to endure it. We can not change what has happened or what may occur at any given time. You do not realise how much your support helps him so try to take some comfort in the fact that you are a good person and let yourself smile again. You have survived the most difficult parts and instead of focusing on the last 15 years, focus on how he can now focus on the rest of his life as a free man.
Be there for your brother but do not forget that you have a life also. I have to protect my well-being in order to protect my brothers also. At least he has me for some support. How much worse would it be if you were not there for him.
I wish for nothing but the best for both of you.
