Hello everyone,
I've been overweight now for nearly five years. When I was a sophomore in high school I could run an 8 minute mile, lift weights for a good hour and a half, I weighed just under 200lbs and I felt fantastic. Now it takes me 15 minutes to jog/walk a mile, I feel like puking at the sight of weights and at 280lbs I feel like crap most of the time.
I think my biggest problem is my eating habits. I'm a musician which means I'm out at night a lot playing gigs. I usually get up around 10 or 11 a.m and I'll eat a piece of fruit for breakfast. I don't really have much of an appetite during the day. My appetite doesn't kick in until around 6 or 7 p.m. From then on I CRAVE things like chocolate, fried foods, burgers etc...Whenever I try to eat things like salads or something that is mostly made of vegetables my stomach just fills with gas and I feel bloated and sick. Fruit is ok but it doesn't keep me full for more than a half hour.
I'm hoping someone out there can give me some advice on how to eat better with the type of lifestyle I live. My Dad says to stop eating after 6 p.m but that won't work because I don't get to go to bed until 3 a.m most of the time.
I've set what I believe to be a realistic goal of losing 30lbs by September. My question is where do I start?

Usually I get a daily influx of emails on health topics. An article from Dr. Mercola really stood out recently though because it mentioned that fat cells have their own mitochondria. Not only was this the first I'd heard of this, he also mentioned that fat serves a purpose in our metabolism. Another new factoid for me. The bottom line for me was to appreciate that even our fat cells play a...

I just do not feel well and I really think that it's because I cried yesterday on my way to work about my Aunt who is in the hospital. I don't think that we will have her much longer. She is very frail. Now she needs help eating. So, this is the third time in a year that I felt this way after crying. I think crying releases toxins into my body. I also worked up a sweat at the gym...

Based on what you wrote, it sounds to me like you need to eat more between the time you get up and 6 or 7 p.m. Whether that is a couple of fairly big meals or a series of small meals is up to you. But whether they are big or small, your meals should consist of things like lean protein (chicken, turkey, fish, tofu, lean red meat, eggs in moderation), healthy carbohydrates (brown rice, whole wheat pasta, whole wheat bread, etc.), some healthy fat (from olive oil, avocados, and nuts in moderation), a little healthy dairy, and as much fresh fruit and as many fresh vegetables as you can manage. If you eat these kinds of food, and avoid fried foods, heavily sugared foods, fast food, overly processed foods, etc., it will help you get rid of the cravings for unhealthy foods.
It's too bad that vegetables don't agree with you, because they are among the healthiest and best food to eat, especially for those trying to lose weight. I encourage you to slowly experiment with different vegetables and see if there are some that agree with you. Maybe raw vegetables don't agree with you but cooked ones will. What about bell peppers sauteed in a little olive oil? Lightly steamed broccoli or green peppers? Roasted asparagus or brussels sprouts, again, lightly drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with a little salt before roasting? What about portobello mushrooms brushed with a little olive oil and soy sauce and cooked in a grill pan, broiled, or on the barbecue?
You also should be getting some regular exercise. It sounds like you've gotten out of shape - most of us do as we get older. You can get back into shape by starting to consistently do some exercise each day and building up until you have a regular program of both cardio and strength building. Start by taking a brisk walk for 15 minutes. Do that every other day. Then add five minutes. And another 5 minutes. Then add another day. And so on. The point is to start doing this on a regular basis so that it becomes part of your daily life, and then build up from there.
Best of luck with it. It's doable. You just need to get started.
I think the idea of not eating after a certain hour has something to do with not eating for a certain number of hours before bedtime. Maybe 4 hours before sleep.
And calories are definitely a biggee. It's amazing how quickly they add up. As you start to lose, you may want to join us on our weekly weigh in where we can encourage each other as well. http://www.dailystrength.org/c/Diets_Weight_Maintenance/forum/16414952-weekly-weighin-may-12-18
Best of luck getting your eating and exericse situated so you will enjoy a healthier existence. :)
Hope things work for you, and WELCOME to the group!
