But, people are all just people, I have no faith, but if someone finds solace in something then fair enough, so long as they cause harm to no one else.

We all lie to ourselves everyday, just to get through it, we lie or we deliberatly obscure truths from ourselves - an easy example for me, is from Peter Singer, how can I morally choose to spend any money beyond necessity when there are people starving to death in the world - my pathetic answer, I ignore it or don't think about it.

People will use anything as an excuse to be mean, cruel and shitty to each other, religion is one of many things people use to make themselves feel superior and justify their negative actions towards others...

On the other hand, religion inspires people (not claiming it is a right or wrong inspiration) to do much good in the world...

I'd judge the person on their intent and action, no matter their excuse.

I am sorry your wife left you, but to demonise an entire section of the worlds population based on a common charactistic, just seems self defeating to me.

I think a better title might have been "What is it with so-called Christians who don't live what they claim to believe?"

Granted, that wouldn't have fit in the little "title" area hehe

I'm a Christian, and I have a big problem with anybody who claims a set of beliefs they don't live by. That's the real problem, I believe, not an entire religion in general.

The same could be said of all religions...people profess to believe, then act in ways that contradict their words. These people are who the post really seems to be targeting, those who want the "image" of a devout believer, but don't want to put out the effort to live it.

I have read all the replies to Petrol's post. I am a Christian. I do believe in the God of the Bible. I too, have been hurt by denominationalism and people who say they are Christians.

First of all, I believe that each person has a right to believe as they chose or not believe at all. Secondly, I believe that one day, we will find out the truth whether man's beliefs that God doesn't exist, in Heaven or Hell, or Judgment is true as the Bible says.
Thirdly, Mr Petrol, if you are a Christian, why use the language you used in your replies?

I can't speak for anyone else. As I said you are free to believe or not believe. What I do know is this. I was once a Biker, an alcoholic and a drug user. When I gave my heart and life to Jesus, I have been free from drugs, alcohol and Biker Gang lifestyles now for 37 years. I strive to help others whenever and wherever I can. I try to treat people with respect, regardless of where or what their lifestyles are. If my beliefs are wrong, that God, Jesus, Heaven, Hell, and judgment exist, what have I lost after I die and find they are false. On the other hand, if I don't believe in God, Jesus, Heaven, Hell and Judgment then, I die and find out they are true, what have I lost? Somehow, I believe most of us believe in a hereafter, that life goes on after physical death.
If that is true, where do we go? Where do we spend what is known as Eternity? Something to think about!!!!!

Christians are simply no different than any other sinners. The difference is they profess their sins to Christ and are supposedly forgiven, so they can go out and trample others again.

Personally, I the majority of them are a bunch of self-righteous, power-mongering, Bible-thumping, duplicitous, lying, hypocritical idiots. But, every now and then, a genuinely nice gem comes out of the pile of feces, so I won't poo poo all Christians at large.

I too have run into self professed Christians who seem far more interested in power than the way of life. OTOH, I doubt that they are the majority.

There is a passage in the Bible (John 8:11) where he is talking to a woman who has sinned, and a group that brought her in for judgment. He asked the group for one who had never sinned to speak against her.

They all left.

His word to the woman was that he was not going to condemn her, but he admonished her to go and sin no more.

It is wrong Christians to interpret forgiveness as permission to go out, repeat the offense, and then come back for permission again. (and again and again, ... )

I admire people who try very hard to treat others with respect; more so when they realize they have failed and try to make it better. It does not matter to me if they do it in the name of God, Allah, Jehovah, or the flying spaghetti monster.

Did you know the Catholic Church are setting up Drive Through Confessionals in certain parts of The States? Like McDonalds, but to confess your sins over the mic.
