I'm sorry to hear about what you're going through. There's a work first program in the state I live in. I'm not sure if it's state or federal but you may possibly be able to get a monthly check or apply for school loans to help with the bills while you go to school. That's how I did it. Plus I worked part time jobs to help pay for other needs

So sorry to see you in this predicament you should start filling out job applications now. And you may not want to but it might be a good idea to start renting out rooms in your house to help cover expenses. You can run a free ad on Craigslist.

Renting out rooms ...good idea/bad idea. It can take MONTHS to evict a bad tenant.

Maybe you can find a roommate to share your moms house? You might want to talk to a lawyer ASAP because if your mom ends up staying there full time they may also take the house.

If you do rent out rooms you can find free rental applications online to print off and make sure you check with the county police for jail records before renting to someone. Just write on the application must pass a clean background check.

Well I found out medicaid could take the house even if I can afford to pay for everything on my own so I may end up homeless regardless. I need to get a lawyer.

I can understand your fears honey. I hope you will contact a lawyer as soon as possible. Find out all the information you can as to where you stand in all of this. That is what they do here. If someone goes into a home, they take everything the person has until there is nothing left and then the state begins to pay. Are you on the mortgage? if your mom isn't going to be moving back home and she still has a mortgage on the house, it may be time to just get rid of the house altogether. get an apartment before you go sinking what little money you have into attorneys and letting strangers move in. You will be happier for the decision after its all said and done.

Your 34 and still in school? Career development or what? How much longer do you have left until your finished? Simplify EVERYTHING till your done.

Looks like there have been some good suggestions given already. I wouldn't know what to do in a situation like this either and there are times it's just beyond us and best to seek those who have knowledge and can handle situations like this. Talking to a lawyer seems to be common and that's a strong start. You're doing the right thing by reaching out and talking about your situation. (I was involved in the long-term care of my dad and was shocked to find gaping holes in the support system. You'd think for all of the decades we've had nursing homes, extended care facilities, assisted living, and the whole host of health problems that occurs for a person and their family to reach that point that we'd be much better equipped and transparent about the resources for help available during crisis times like this!)

Care for the aged is a multibillion dollar industry .... and it is almost 100% paid for by the resident's ASSETS.

They get the real estate, the income (social security, retirement income, savings, ... whatever is available) ... ALL ASSETS.

Someone has to pay for that care ... and usually, there is no money for it .... OTHER THAN the resident's assets.

Have your Mom to sign the house over to you or someone in the family. Just get it out of her name asap.
