I've questioned the existence of a higher power since I was in high school, when I was able to look back at my childhood and realized the things I went through weren't quite right or normal. And now as an adult I have a greater capacity to question and reason, but the suffering that people endure and the wickedness that some people are capable of has only confused me more. I also don't like the idea that I'm not in control of my greater destiny.
I think people can be spiritual without subscribing to a defined set of doctrines which dictate the word of unknown creators and puppet masters.
I wish there were a magic lamp.
Right now having to deal with my old cat being sick, and dealing with that, while thinking of the VAST solar solar system....though maybe i'll try to con/convince myself of the rainbow bridge, when that bad event eventually happens.
As for God, it's important to first establish that you still believe. Do you have a strong conviction that god exists? For me, I have gone from born-again-christian to atheist, because I have no conviction that there is a god now. When you know for sure whether there is a god or not you can begin to ask him questions, or move on.

Are you serious?! Being depressed is an ILLNESS! It is NOT a normal response to the challenges we face, and it is NOT a good thing! If your god tells you this then you are deluded. I'm sorry, but this is just bullshit.
if religion does work for you---and you actually are happy, not depressed---great; whatever works.
but, i keep on forgetting camus' theory of the absurd, and how it's best to just accept that the world doesn't make sense. it's only from this site that i keep on remembering that stuff, but that quick forget it again.

Penntucky, I am sorry about your cat and you are going through a difficult time. Our animal friends are a great source of companionship and comfort.
And I know when the topic of death is close to home is when people may hope that there is a Rainbow bridge for our animal friends. It helps people get through the grieving process. A comfort. I did the same thing for my doggy. I really have no clue what lies beyond this life but it's a nice thought to hope there is something pleasant beyond this life.
If it helps you to feel better then yeah, con/convince.
