Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
Honest enough?
I love you toddi and I think you are wonderful... always and for ever.. Thanks for the honesty... big hugs
Same for you up2... We that struggle with depression or bi-polar have to work a lot harder then most.. Cherish what good times there are and dont be so hard on yourself.. You did not mean to hurt anyone else and you feel like shit about it.. Show you have a conscience which is more then a lot of the *Norms* I see out there..
God this sounds so self-pitying and weak !
Leeigh... the depression does not let us see it but know that the people here are the best to know how you feel and feel it theirselves... Baby steps sweetie... self affirmations..You keep telling yourself a little bit at a time or write down your good qualities, what a big heart you have and work on it daily, even when you are hating yourself or feel to fat or miserable... Think about these bastard Narsasstic bastards that think they are normal and could give a shit less about anyone but their selves..
We wear our hearts on our sleeves and give everything and anything to anyone so they will care about us or because it makes us feel good to help others..... Then you tell me that we are not great people that are deserving of love, respect and some peace in our lives... We are the most deserving people in this world... AGain my opinion...
I've not liked myself for most of my life. The thing spirals because the less one likes oneself, the less they like themselves ...... and so it goes.
I think mine started early too, abuse from parents who were trying to NOT "spoil" me ... so they made damn sure my spirit was pretty well beaten out of me.
So at some point as a kid I got fat and hated that, and my self image (if I had any) really took a dive. Then I got old enough to date girls, and really none were interested - not that you could blame them. So again, I liked myself less and less....
I was married for 10 years, and my wife left me ... right back to the spiral ...... it must be ME, right?????
To your second part question - someone came along who taught me how to LAUGH AT MYSELF ......... This was not easy because I was busy hating myself. Laughing at myself just made me feel Worse, because it shined all sorts of light on things I Hated about me. BUT ........... I started to see I'm not the ONLY ignorant, ugly, fat ass, nut job out in the world ...... so I even allowed myself to start laughing at Other People too! Some might find this rude .... I found it funny.
Suddenly I was Laughing. This helped. I got here and met a funny as hell bear, and a lady who reminds me every day (and all of us) how Beautiful and Wonderful we are. I also met someone in this group who has shown me that I may not be as horrible and "Wrong" as I Thought. (You won't see them here much anymore, but they've helped me a lot). All of you have.
Finally, that person who taught me to laugh at myself, also gave me a priceless gift. That gift is almost 4 years old now, and just says to me out of the blue "I love you Daddy" ................ just like That! It MELTS my Heart!!!!!!! It's really hard to hate me when that kid LOVES me, you know?
I still dislike a LOT ABOUT me ... but I am starting to not Hate ME quite so much.
