Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Support Group
Deep-vein thrombosis, also known as deep-venous thrombosis or DVT, is the formation of a blood clot ("thrombus") in a deep vein. It can be caused by something preventing blood from circulating or clotting normally. Join the support group if you are coping with DVT and find others who are going through the same challenges.

Is it too early to be thinking of martinis?
Just got back from my (one week early) INR, fully expecting to have it on the high side, what with the nose bleed and all.
So you can imagine the surprise both the lab tech and I had when it came up 1.4.
I couldn't be more sick of this %&$#!!! Last check was 2.8, and I had been bouncing around in range for a few tests prior to that, so we felt good about going a month in between checks. IT'S BEEN A YEAR and I'M STILL NOT STABLE ON WARFARIN GAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
So the nurse should call around 4pm to let me know about any dosage changes. My guess is they'll throw in another 10 mg day and recheck in a week. *sigh*
Well, on the bright side, I'm in no danger of bleeding to death...in fact I could take advantage of this new low and do a little drunken stock car racing this evening. Very frustrated right now - thanks for letting me rant on.

Look at what my best friend did with my picture!

We all have 24 hours in a day. How we spend these hours is important. Watching a little bit of a video about how sitting affects us made me aware of how much sitting and laying down I do. Gonna have to work on that.Your turn. Tell me another truth.
ODD to see many folks that understand anticoag therapy, NOT being therapeutic...
One of my friends brought me round a load of cushions and a big stick last night. She told me that historically Japanese wives wait till their husbands go out, then hit seven bells out of the cushions... Maybe if the martinis don't hit the spot...
A similar thing happened to me awhile back. My INR had been all over the place, but had seemed to stabilize for awhile in the very low 2's. Then, while flossing my teeth one night, my gums started bleeding and I was spitting out mouthfulls of blood. I started to panic because I realized I had never heard of a way to get your gums to stop bleeding. Thankfully after a few more mouthfulls of blood it finally stopped. (if anyone does know of a way to get your gums to stop bleeding, I think we might all benefit from that though! :) ).
The next morning I called the clinic and went in to have my INR checked. It was a 1.9 !! The bleeding never happened again ... and my INR has been a lot higher at times.
Not sure what the moral is here, but I guess our bodies occasionally play these darn tricks on us when on warfarin.
Hopefully this was just a one time thing for you.
Best of luck to you.

The nurse didn't seem fazed at all about nosebleeds or low INR's - just told me to pop 10 mgs today as well as my usual Weds 10 mgs, then back to 7.5 daily with a recheck in a week. Blah, blah, blah. All I can say is that little machine had better be right...
I have my INR check next week. As some of know, it'll be the first time that I've gone 4 weeks between checks, as some of you know. I'm curious to see if my INR is either through the roof or in the toilet. Man, it's been such a bastard to keep it therapuetic. I totally feel your pain on that one.
Bleeding gums-holding cold water in your mouth always seemed to help me , or my kids if they lost a tooth.
And so once again, IT IS WHAT IT IS! Blessings, Teri
My rational mind fully understands that INR's can be erratic and difficult to manage, and I have little control over the outcome. My rational mind also wonders what the hell is the point of taking warfin when it never seems to stay therapeutic.
And, truth be told, I also worry that there's something else health-wise going on that's causing this, besides FVL? But it's probably best not to go THERE right now...I've got too much to do today to be Googling various diseases and conditions.
RMB - if it turns out you're out of range with your INR next week, let me know. Milwaukee's only a 6 hour drive, and I'll bring the Grey Goose if you supply the olives!
On a different note..my mom had her test results come back yesterday and unlike myself she is heterozygous for FVL,,I am so glad she is not double copied which means my dad is at least hetero for it...she also has really high homocysteine levels and will be on folic acid (i think) for life time..sounds much healthier than warfarin...I also have the double copied MTHR gene thing but apparently my homocysteine levels are ok...so far. it makes me nuts that I have to even know all this stuff....I still do not know if my kids should be tested...b/c of the stigma with insurance companies.. my daughter knows NOT to be on birth control pills. And so it goes..you know another thing that just figures..anti-depressants are not really compatible lol,, now that this is making me lose my mind,,,break out the Blue Moon and start slicing those oranges.
What's your dose of warfarin these days? Your INR has only been 1.1 to 1.8 since May?! Wow, are they testing you every week still?
I had the same problem. When I first went on warfarin, I was therapuetic when I was discharged from the hospital but I had to stay an extra three days because I wasn't therapuetic. Then after that, I was below 2 for the next 6 months. I think they were scared to death to increase my dosages by too much at one time so it was these contast minor dosage changes. Annoying. Finally, 15 mgs per day got me there. At the time, my treating doctor was a Cardiologist and his staff was used to dealing with elderly patients. They typically don't need as high of a dosage of warfarin, so that 15mgs had them all worked up.
Now, almost two years later, it only takes 11mgs to 12mgs to keep me therapuetic... for now. Funny little drug, that warfarin.
Laura~ I so understand your frustration! When I read your post about your nosebleed, I too thought you would be really high. But unstable after a year??? WOW! Now I am gonna start drinkin'
I have been therapeutic for about 3 weeks. Was being alowed to go fortnightly for tests for the first time, Had started back a work part-time, but then went for a doctor's letter saying that I was fit for work --- and ended up in hospital again, where my INR had dipped to 1.6.
I had been so careful - taking my pils on time, trying to build up my walking slwly, eating regularly and consistently. Nothing stupid. It's like INR is this naughty pixie that's hiding round the corner, and peeping out every now and agaian, going "HA HA you thougt you'd sorted me, but I tricked you"
Back on the clexane once again to. I'd almost forgotten I had a phobia of needles too...
