Half the time I don't know what people are talking about here because so many abbreviations are used. That's when I just stop reading.

I'm glad you posted. I continue to have the abbreviation problem. Oftentimes it has nothing to do with medical terms - it's Twitter-like. I don't do Twitter, but I understand due to the character limit there's a whole new "vocabulary" going on. I'm with Imarighter, if a discussion is abbreviation packed I just have to move on. Do Twitterers also speak abbreviations e.g enn ess? My mind requires me to convert which could be totally off-the-wall. This mental problem can be very taxing when there's a discussion laced with abbreviations! And I'm hesitant to ask for a translation because I don't like it known that I'm Twitter illiterate.

I now have comfort when the subject line contains "OT". I was on this site for a year before I saw the meaning because I assumed it meant Occupational Therapy which I'm not involved in so I skipped the discussion. (I doubt I'll ever be a Twitterer because as you can see I'm too wordy.)

Imawriter has a point and I'll bet dollars to donuts that others do the same. I'll try to use less acronyms and abbreviations when I respond to posts...

Yes, on this group and other groups I see a lot of abbreviations right off from the beginning of the post. What I would like to see is that when a topic is started, the first time they mention the word they are going to abbreviate they actually spell it out and then from that point use the abbreviation. Example: "Today we went to the market to get nasal spray (NS). Later that night when I gave him the NS, it did not work"

I have to agree. I understand that people here longer than I have been are used to the abbreviations & mean no harm but I skip a lot too.
