Is there a place where I can find out what some of you talk about with abbreviations? Such as NS, DX, etc Thanks, Chelle
i'm sorry because a while back i brought this same subject up & then i felt like a dummy because i didn't get much response.
and then i turn around & use abbreviations myself....
and i was soooo proud of myself, that i finally figured out IMO (in my opinion) that i started using it lately.
i thought i was just a dummy because i have never learned how to text and i think a lot of the abbreviations aren't medical as much as internet & texting "slang".
ps. i also would like to apologize for my spelling errors. i try to read my posts over before i click "add", but many times when i re-look after i post, my spelling is horrendous! (and the stupid spell check seems to make it worse).
the OT (off topic) is a daily stregnth (DS) thing. it is listed in "the rules" somewhere. We are supposed to put that if a post is not directly related to this board & the subject of "COPD & Emphysema".
that one i get very confused on when to use personally.
for instance, this topic; "abbreviations" is it considered off topic?
ps. i ask when an abbreviation really stumps me
i also get confused when people DON'T use some common abbreviations for common things pertaining to our disease.
for example; PFT (pulmonary function test)=PFT i understand, as that is one of the first tests & most common tests we have.
when people say, "i did the blow thingy at the doctor and he said ...."
wow do i get confused!
or, "my numbers are ...." ;which numbers? PFT, Sp02, flow meter...?
ps. gracennme; dx is diagnosis, just like rx is a prescription. but that may only be in america. i'm not sure if medical abbreviations are the same in other countries. maybe someone from canada or some other country can tell us that?
Many of us had a wake up call for OT because a few members had their accounts temporarily disabled because the subject, with no OT, was against the purpose of the group. Using OT keeps us out of penalty. When in doubt, add it.
jarca, please don't be concerned about spelling unless you're sure no one understands what you are writing. In fact, I suggest you turn off the spell checker and see how it goes.

I agree not to worry too much about spelling. I know I misspell at times but is that really all that important in the whole scheme of things? I don't think so. =)
