Are the raised beds expensive there? I priced them here for my son and his gf, they are crazy expensive,

Yes they are. Most people make their own here too. (I have already used long planter boxes or a few big round containers for individual plants. Last few years I did not do it because I kept hoping I would be gone)
What do the kids want to plant?

The kids want to plant a vegetable garden but I have no idea what they hope to plant lol

Do they have community gardens there? We have a couple here where plots of land are divided up and people can have gardens there

Many people who live in apartments use the community gardens around here

They do have them around (like you said, where there is an apt complex. Used to have one at Dad's nursing home. Was neat to have in the courtyard where they could help.) Where I am is all yards and their own properties.
