DAB...we also used to eat the unblessed hosts (bread). How the hell did you know, dude? Wait...you must have been an alter boy...
And we did the same thing with the unblessed host (bread). In my parish they were hand made by a certain sect of nuns (carmelite nuns, I think). Quality workmanship.
Let me guess.....did your home parish have the hippie couple who played guitars and sung hymns at your parish?
Altar girls were a phenomenon of the 90's in my home parish.

One during my first marriage, when my eldest was still a baby, I went to confession. After hearing that I had been married by a judge(family friend) in an inn, the priest said that he could not forgive me my sins (which had nothing to do with the marriage), but could only offer me a blessing. Yup, if I had made a Michael Corleone-type confession but been married by the church my transgressions would be wiped clean. I've never been back.
My second marriage was at the Little Church of the West in Vegas. The minister was Christian but not Catholic so I guess I've never been married in the eyes of the Catholic Church either. So I can still have a Catholic Church wedding unlike my second husband who is apparently still married to his first wife because they did have a Catholic wedding.
If you're parish is still rocking the organ with funeral dirges, I'll guess the Pastor is over 55.
My current parish has a Monsignor that asks people to meditate during the homily (just very briefly as he makes a point about something). My Dad was sort of horrified at this notion and declared that my current parish sucked.
It was a Catholic mass so when they got to the part about the Sign Of Peace we all walked around and hugged each other and shook each others hand.
I could hear him hissing at everyone to get back in their seats and behave!
After the mass, when we were outside I asked him in front of everyone if he had ever been to a Catholic ceremony of any kind. He said no, so I explained the Sign of Peace. He got all embarrassed and everyone started laughing! He said - I thought you guys picked the most horrible time in the mass to start acting up and I was trying to get you to knock it off!
After, when I would see him - I would say.... Hey John! Peace be with you! And he would say - KNOCK IT OFF!
