My partner of 13 years and I divorced in March, but lived in the home together with our pets until June when we sold our home. The relationship was abusive, mostly emotionally, but also physically a few times. It took me about 4 years to get the courage to divorce her. I loved her and tried my best to be a great wife, but I couldn't bare it anymore.
She became very difficult when she knew I was leaving. I know I did the right thing for me. We split our pets up. I miss having a companion, someone I took care of and made dinners for. I miss my pets so much my heart breaks and I think of them daily. I'm trying to move forward and heal, but this is a painful process. Somedays I feel pretty good and others I don't. I drink to much at times to numb the pain, but I know I have to feel my feelings.

I'm horrified! I knew my insurance would go up due to getting a new car but I didn't expect it to go up over $2,000. I did have an accident with the snow/ice in the winter. I was just telling my brother that I have had my car since March 2, 2026 and have only spent $75 on an oil change. Now this! I called another insurance company and their quote was over $4,000. I guess I have to pay...

It will take some time to adjust. You are just "used to" being around this person. It was 13 years, after all. It feels weird right now, but it is a good weird. You will adjust, you will get through this. The longer away, the easier it gets. You are strong.
Because of the abuse, and now you are drinking, I would highly suggest getting into therapy. You can look for a therapist through a Google search. Talking in therapy helps a lot. It's someone you can be completely honest with, and they will give you support and guidance on how to move on with this next chapter of your life.
There are also good break-up books, and articles online. I found that reading about getting through break ups helped me. Also, lots of free YouTube videos about getting through this difficult time for you.
You did the right thing. It's not going to be easy right away. But, it will absolutely get better and better as time goes on. Have NO contact with this person at all! Block her number, delete her social media... cut her off and away completely. This is important to do, as you don't want her contacting you down the road, and her trying to get back into this type of situation with you ever again. Remember once an abuser always an abuser. You are strong. You are going to be okay.
