I received a message from my best friend yesterday saying we "really need a heart to heart." I went to NY to visit her for her 30th b-day over the weekend.
During this weekend trip I was surrounded by alcoholics and potheads. We went to her parents' house to hang out. Her mother and father were drunk, Her brother and his girlfriend drank a whole bottle of wine in less than 30 mins. Every single person there smoked joint after joint on top of bong hits and whatever else.
I don't drink. I don't smoke pot. I take my meds...and I figured it being a weekend off and everyone else was getting high, I would take extra xanax so I would at least have some sort of high. Friday and Saturday, that was it. I took extra meds b/c Fri and Sat...they started smoking pot first thing in the morning...and smoked all day long.
Now this friend calls me and says she's concerned that I have a pill problem. That even her parents and her brother (the worst drug addict I know) are worried about me. I told her it was just for the weekend with her since I couldn't drink or smoke, so now she's insisting that I should get off meds.
WTF?? Is it just me? Or is there something really wrong with this picture?

IMHO, if you are in fact taking your prescription meds to "party " or get "high" you do have a problem. I don't know why it would matter that your friends obviously have some addictive or abusive behaviors because that has nothing to do with your choice to abusively use your Rx. You have already stated here that you are addicted to xanax, you have physical withdrawal, ect. If a whole bunch of sublimely doped up people noticed you abusing your Rx, maybe you should seriously consider talking to your doc again about detoxing from the xanax and trying yet another option.
