I received a message from my best friend yesterday saying we "really need a heart to heart." I went to NY to visit her for her 30th b-day over the weekend.

During this weekend trip I was surrounded by alcoholics and potheads. We went to her parents' house to hang out. Her mother and father were drunk, Her brother and his girlfriend drank a whole bottle of wine in less than 30 mins. Every single person there smoked joint after joint on top of bong hits and whatever else.

I don't drink. I don't smoke pot. I take my meds...and I figured it being a weekend off and everyone else was getting high, I would take extra xanax so I would at least have some sort of high. Friday and Saturday, that was it. I took extra meds b/c Fri and Sat...they started smoking pot first thing in the morning...and smoked all day long.

Now this friend calls me and says she's concerned that I have a pill problem. That even her parents and her brother (the worst drug addict I know) are worried about me. I told her it was just for the weekend with her since I couldn't drink or smoke, so now she's insisting that I should get off meds.

WTF?? Is it just me? Or is there something really wrong with this picture?

It's funny, i've had warnings from my pdoc, my primary doc, and some other doc there about being careful not to get addicted to xanax.

I've had xanax scripts since I was in my early 20s', never a problem with me, cuz if it always put me to sleep. it doesn't now, when i'm overly agitated, it just works!

Yet, I've been getting vicodin refills for ove a year! not one warning on that...? go figure.

Hanna, I know exactly how you feel. When I go home all my family does is drink and drink. Can't drink as you know, taking my meds. I take extra Klonopin just not to be anxious.

Now, I am the only one in family before I was on meds was an alchoholic. HA They get smashed and I have a problem.

Well, What I would do is say just what you told us. Stand up for yourselves.

they dont see pot and drinking as could be addting and if they do they do think it could be them i had that sturggle most of my life with takeing my mom and dad are drunks and my everyone really exp my anut and my grandpreants everyone smokes weed Im use to it all. i use to be a chronic with weed but my bf kinda told me he knew i was better then this Z a day. med switch made me sick when o smoked weed so i stopped now i do once n awhile more then i feel confable with now so iam staying away frum smokeing myself. and since the last couple of weekend at least once i got stoned everyone around me that smoke and was there when i smoked last time feels like shit for letting me.. my bf tryed to explan to them its my choice..hes rite i want to ..but i have aways hated drunks fuck i live with them. pot i dont mind with in reason..bf a.d.h.d if he dosent smoke pot i would get in so many fights with him cuz hes off the walls LOL

I thought I was going to read this thread and about you being subject to an intervention for your bipolar. Man was I wrong!!!

Lets cut through the crap though. These people are clearly not gonna help you become the best you can be. If anything they're going to make your condition worse.

If you love them you can tell them you're concerned about their own states of mind and health but people like this usually try and use your bipolar as a means of justifying their own actions or lack of them.

For this reason I have no contact with my own family, and in your case I'd probably advise the same.

your friends shouldnt be casting stones...BUT I was once addicted to xanax. Until I was off of it for about 3 months, which is when my brain woke up, I did not realize how I was. I was a zombie. I had trouble thinking. I also rarely took over the recomended dosage. I have been clean for 10 months and I feel great.

This weekend on Sunday. I was at church and started to get that pre panic attack feeling. It was all quiet and everyone was in prayer and there goes me rummageing thru my purse and grabbing pills out and chugging water. My BF would be freaked out if she saw all the pills I take ..But Im sure she would love to have pills to take when she gets nervous or to keep her calm ..she has bad anxiety too. She is your true friend so it shouldent let itself turn into a fight .. you guys are better then that. But anyone else can go scratch

Doesn't any one else see a problem with using extra xanax for recreational purposes? I know your friends and family were messed up and out of line when they spoke to you, but using extra xanax because you like the way it feels screams of a problem that should be examined, doesnt it? Just ignore me if I'm out of line, I'm just afraid you're overlooking a problem because of the messenger who delivered it.

useing extra is deffnity an iussu I did the same with ativan when i was yonger being 14. but i dont think its any diffrent frum to much drinking or smokeing

Something completely wrong with that..so strange you mention this, because i just chewed out my 'friend' about drinking at lunch 4 beers and then going back to work...he's slightly drunk, couldn't type a message on the im to save his life and he's going to drive home!! AND PEOPLE ARE WORRIED ABOUT US!!

I didn't read the entire thread...I stopped at lastgunslinger....because he said exactly what I would have said..they are projecting their own misuse of substances ,onto you...to settle things w your friend,maybe another chat w her,that your meds are not optional or recreational(say like their pot is),but a neccessity for your mental health.

In this way ,you have not accused her of abuse,just clarified your need for your meds,and your situation

Using xanax as recreational is very far from the norm for me. I don't take it even as much as prescribed, as I've said before. I fully admit that I am dependent on xanax, my docs are fully aware of that fact. I take it for my panic/anxiety or to stop withdrawals. Since I will not drink b/c of my meds and illness, and I do not do drugs aside from Rx, so I did partake in an extra xanax.

Anyway...I talked to this friend and we've come to agree to disagree. She's concerned, but she said she'll drop it. She doesn't understand, but we won't end a friendship over it.

I can accept alcoholics, I can accept pot smokers, I can accept people addicted to narcotics. To each their own. What I ABSOLUTELY cannot abide is a hypocrite. If this friend of yours thinks you have a pill problem because of your behavior (I'm assuming) over the weekend, just tell her that it was her perception that was off because of the alcohol/pot. You were perfectly fine. "Did I say I took extra pills? No you must have imagined it...how many beers had you had". Nothing wrong with a little mind freak now and again. I'd be livid. Don't let it get to you. Xanax is better for your liver than alcohol.
