Anxiety Support Group
Anxiety is a physical condition marked by intense and persistent feelings of distress, fear, angst or dread. General anxiety caused by routine day-to-day stresses usually passes quickly and is experienced by almost everyone at one time or another. However, such feelings that linger over time and are very difficult to cope with, and which lack a clear cause, may indicate...

Hi everyone, my name is Ayla. A friend recommended this site to me, and I thought I would introduce myself to the group. I am bipolar with Generalized Anxiety Disorder as a diagnosis. What that means to me is I get really freaked out at odd times, and I had to teach myself how to manage it on three scheduled tablets a day (rarely more, often less).
When I was young, my anxiety took the form of true school phobia. I went to an alternate high school. But I made it through, and the program did so well I went on to graduate college on the Dean's List of Achievement. My anxiety didn't flare up again until the years of the late 1990s. I wasn't medicated for it until about five years ago, when I started to have symptoms of agoraphobia. Now I am working on reducing my anxiety and gradually getting out of the house more and more.
Now, when I go on walks, I take the cat in his cat stroller (yes I suppose it is a little eccentric) and it eases my anxiety to have the cat with me. I have arranged to go on a couple of outings in the near future, one a religious event, and one a seminar on "Habits of Happy People." I am taking my Sister-in-Law with me on the second one, and that will make it much easier to go.
Sometimes I get free-floating anxiety. I use what I learned from my collection of relaxation tapes to help me to get through. It helps a lot.
So that's me. I just thought I would introduce myself, and maybe we can get to know one another a little better. I am excited about finding this site, so far I love it

I am glad you are challenging your agoraphobia by getting out of the house. That is a difficult thing to do but it is the best way to end the agoraphobic cycle. You should be very proud of yourself for facing it.

One of the first things I did to help relieve the fear of walking outside was to step out the front door, and step back in. Did this for several days as an exercise. This exercise gives me the focus on the "in the moment" for those crazy "oops, " feelings with the changes in the anxiety level.
So glad you're making your way through the changes.
Best wishes.
Hope by reading other postings you can find information that could be useful to you.

The Anxiety and Panic Attacks Support Groups are really great. I would steer away from the Depression one since it can get a little catty and negative in there.
A book that helped me out a lot was Panic Attacks Workbook: A Guided Program for Beating the Panic Trick by David Carbonell. There is a section exclusive to agoraphobia. I developed horrible driving anxiety, which there is also a section. Although uncomfortable, the exercises will help you desensitize to your anxiety triggers.
Anyways, welcome and I hope you are able to find some peace in your journey.
