Hello everyone. I hope you're doing well and staying safe. I am in need of quite a lot of advice today it feels.
I've been struggling with defensiveness and reactivity since I was young. I grew up in a toxic household with a narcissistic dad which always made me feel on edge and needing to fight my way out of things. I was always told I was wrong and really do believe that. I'm working of self-esteem but it's so fucking difficult to believe good things about myself. Aside from that, I'm always reacting to everything. I've gotten better since I've gained insight into my behaviors but I still feel out of control most of the time around people I'm comfortable with. I just always snap and really would love advice on how to "not snap" I don't realize I do it until after and have a really hard time figuring out what triggers me. I'm very communicative now at 23 but have trouble regulating emotions because I never was taught how to..... my house growing up was a battle everyday and no one ever knew because we looked normal.
I'm at the point where I d already given up on myself but try for other people and it's a confusing feeling but I just want to change things about myself so badly.
thanks for reading

I did the dumbest thing today. I charged my earbuds, unplugged the block and put the block in my little bag instead of the earbuds. I wasn't happy about that when I got to the gym. What a dummy!

By doing it in three steps, and doing it at least three times, you'll be able to feel the calmness (it may take more than this, however, it's natural, and it works to get you back into a better balance to think and act clearly and calmly).
The journal writing private will also help to work through the patterns so you can find what works best for you to find calm.
Best wishes.
thank you so much for sharing. I am sorry to hear about the environment you grew up in and I am extremely happy to hear you are actively seeking advice to help your overall health and well-being. Active breathing exercises are very helpful to reach calmness, especially to take care of our body from the elevated blood pressure and rapid heart beat.
for me personally, I would physically isolate myself from the situation to find a peaceful area (within the home or the place I am at) to calm my thoughts and thoroughly think what went wrong and how I should respond next - a response that will make the situation better and not worse, especially for yourself & health, which may impact how others will respond to you as well.
I also like the idea of journaling to recognize patterns of the situation you are in. it doesnt have to be an essay-like entry if you're into writing. bullet points are fine, whether it is on paper or through a note app on your phone.
I hope this helps.
best,
We have to believe that these things take time, and we will get to where we need to be, but we are only at the beginning of our journey.
It’s understanding who you are, what makes you tick that builds self esteem. So through writing it out, speaking to others - it will slowly give you insight and clarity.
