Hi all!
I find the only anxiety medication that has worked for me is Xanax, but it has never officially been prescribed to me. I have taken them here and there from my mom because she does not like them and they make her feel loopy, so in a bad attack she will just give them to me. I know this is probably frowned upon, but my question is, how can I get them prescribed to me? I DO NOT have an addictive personality and I do not abuse them nor do I plan to. However, I live in Staten Island NY, where it is DRUG central and the addiction and over doses here are so out of control that people who really need medications that help cannot receive them because of the level of mistrust. What can I do? My psychiatrist said no already because they are "habit forming" but she's sucky as it is so I made an appointment with my regular physician to see if maybe I can get something that isnt habit forming but has similar effect? I feel like I've hit a brick wall, help..

I did the dumbest thing today. I charged my earbuds, unplugged the block and put the block in my little bag instead of the earbuds. I wasn't happy about that when I got to the gym. What a dummy!

All of the Benzos :Xanax,
Klonopin, Ativan , Valium etc are "habit forming " in that you have to
continue to increase the dose over time to get the same calming effect.
They are extremely difficult to wean off. The "rebound anxiety" you experience when you try to stop the drug can be worse than the original anxiety.
How comfortable do you feel with your doctor? Hopefully you feel fairly comfortable with him/her. I would just be open and honest about your experience and what you are hoping for. Your doctor may want to prescribe an SSRI, as these can help with anxiety. I agree with Bon Temps that Buspar is also commonly used for anxiety as well.
I really hope your appointment goes well. Please let us know how it goes.
I'm sorry.
In order to be prescribed, through your own prescription, you will have to work with the doctor to list your physical symptoms, sensations, and be pro-active in order to prove your case.
A parent stepping in to help their child is normal, and happens far more than people will ever know.
Knowing a medication works for you, is part of the treatment plan.
To prove your case, the symptoms the drug helps with, start with those symptoms. Work with the information you have, and move forward with that.
Best wishes. I hope you are able to obtain your own prescription.
HA, not me, kept me awake for 2 full days.
so, I have no issue with telling doc, I tried something, didn't work and can they try me for a few days (not asking for a months of pills) on something else. Have had very good luck with that.
I take .25 ativan to sleep, have for 2 years and never increased it., in fact, will skip days here and there. Maybe for me its different because of the fibro.
