This community is dedicated to those who have lost a husband, wife, or partner. Anything is open for discussion here, with the hope that we can focus on grief, bereavement, life after loss, and continuing on after a great loss.

Pancreatic cancer took my lovely wife away from me about 18 months ago. Messed me up big time. Took me way longer than the 2 weeks of grieving I anticipated, only because that seemed to me my grieving period for other deaths of family. But losing anyone that is your true love devastates all of us. Nothing worse. We search and search for answers and find none. We hurt so badly that we can focus on nothing else. All the Whys, What ifs. And the emptiness. Why is that? I spent well over a year trying my best to figure all this out. This is not an emotional loss, nor a physical loss. It is a spiritual loss. And it is this spiritual loss that overwhelms us and we suffer from it emotionally and physically. I believe that a spiritual joining happens between a man and woman. We become one. And when our true love dies and leaves us, there spirit leaves and our spirit is broken and wounded and badly damaged. So what is our spirit? It is our true self, our inner self, our eternal self, that part of us that lives on forever. Our spirit is who we really are on the inside. Our spirit is also called our man of the heart. And a broken heart is what we all have suffered. We lost the most important part of our unified spirits, and there is no pain that can compare. As much as we would like to think this pain is unique to us, it is not. This is a part of our human experience. And death is as much a part of life as life itself. Like everyone else, we never really contemplated our life without the other. And for those of us that stood by helpless as we watched our loved one wither away, instantly die or we weren't even with them when their life ended, a part of us died with them. We are broken. No doubt about it. Our faith can sustain us only so far. Our philosophies and religions fail to give us the comfort we so need. And the worst part of it all is that we must go through it to begin our healing process. And ever so slowly, we begin to grasp the reality that they are gone and not coming back to us in this dimension. We begin to search inward to find out about the "I" that we are left with, no longer the "we". And the pain propels us into deep introspection, throwing out what we don't like about ourselves, keeping that which we are comfortable keeping. And a metamorphus occurs. Some things about us from our youth return to us that were lost through all the experiences we transversed through this thing called life. We grow more connected with who we really are and we begin building ourselves a new. I like to think that my wife had completed her purposes here, had become the person she was created to be, and it was time for her to pass into a new dimension where she is free from the oppression and battles we all face in this thing called life. She ran her race to the end and ran it well. Me, well I wasn't near finished. I have a whole lot of growing as a person to do, removing layers upon layers of stinkin thinking. And I'm learning more and more about myself, who I am and who I want to be. No longer do I have her to hold me up, to be my helpmate, to be my love. No, its time I faced the remainder of my days with the realization that life is whatever I decide to make it. I can continue living in my past, or I can move forward and mold myself into the person I want to be. And once I figured out that I really didn't know a damn thing about anything, I found that inner peace and contentment I had to have to move beyond my memories of a wonderful life spent as a "we", and now forge ahead to build yet another life with the new and improved Scottie. And one day I just woke up and realized, my grief is over. My life has begun. So it is time I run my own race and get on with living. And I've come to the realization that all our experiences, our loves, our pains, our sufferings, our sorrows, are all just pieces of this amazing thing called life. And what we do with this wonderful gift of life is completely up to us in our time remaining. And there is not a one of us that knows when our end will be. So seize the day. Make the most of your time remaining. Find your passions, find new loves, create the new and improved you, live your life with no stone unturned. We must live our lives for the adventure it truly is. Our life is unique in the complexities of eternity. Take full advantage of it. And those my friends are my thoughts for now. And as I wrote a friend tonight, I'm in a good place. And all of you will find your good place as well. I promise. ~~~ ScottieĀ

Today I feel grateful. Grateful for my dog Blue (Blue Jean Baby Queen, Prettiest girl I've ever seen). Grateful I'm still kickin'. Grateful I'm finally taking responsibility for my health. Grateful I own my home. Grateful for good friends and neighbors who watch over me. Grateful to God for His everlasting love and patience with me. Grateful I survived the 10 years since my wife of 30 years...
Although, I did find comfort in my faith. Just knowing my husband -- according to my belief -- is healthy, happy and loved beyond measure made every moment of grief worth it. It is the price I pay so that he can be where he is, and it is a price I would pay 10 times over if it means he is safe and free of that dreadful cancer. As I pay that price, I also face living this "amazing thing called life." Your words describe it well, and I thank you for expressing it. For those who are new to this site because they have just experienced the excrutiating pain of their spirits breaking, I hope your words bring hope that it won't always hurt the way it hurts right now.
Hugs to all
You really are a wonderful writer!

Keep up the good work
Others chose to seek out answers. They chose to fight to find out the whys and whats. And in the end, if they are people of faith, they grow stronger in that faith. And they gain an even greater understanding of the grace of God and how He can carry us thru anything we encounter. These folks run, but they run to God and not away from Him. And they grow stronger in their faith to the point that they are using this experience to help those who are going thru it. All of a sudden they are almost experts in something they would rather not know about. A hard lesson to learn for certain. And when enough time goes by we learn not how to get over it but rather how to live with it. A way to accept it that's unique to each and everyone of us. Because we are uniquely made as individuals.
There are no patent answers to this. Just a lot of questions i n the beginning until it all becomes clear when we chose to accept and not hide from the fact we are all a part of this.
Take care all.
Peace, Tim
Great post! I believe we've all experienced the most difficult situation life holds. But time really does heal. Most of us have spent some time in the place that Tim calls "flight". We can work so hard to stay in he past, stagnant, trying so hard not to move forward. The peace and joy and exhilaration of life can be ours again when we begin to channel all that energy that's holding us there into finding ourselves again. Seize the day is right! Discover what this life holds for you, discover your purpose, your passions. Life has always been an adventure and still is if we choose to seek it. That "good place" is out there waiting for us all to find again. Keep your eyes, your mind and your heart open. It won't look the same but it's there and it's amazing. And I believe that the loves we lost are there, cheering us on in each step we take moving forward, no matter how small or large, and yes, even when we stumble, finding our way, living again this life we were given.
Peace and ((hugs))

I still miss him everyday and mostly miss, US...He always, used to say when I was having a bad day, upset over something..Gail, get over it, better days are coming...he was usually right...
It's easy to dwell in the bottomless pit of self pity, guilt and regrets for too long..
But, I've decided I not going to do that...I'm going to be grateful for the wonderful life and family we created...because like my grand daughter said one day when I was sad and missing Dennis..Just remember grandma, if you and grandpa hadn't got married I and my cousins wouldn't be here..
Out of the mouth of babes...
I've lost three family members to pancreatic cancer, brother, uncle and cousin..It's terrible, I'm sorry your love had to go through it, Scottie..
"Grieving is a necessary passage and a difficult transition to finally letting go of sorrow...not a permanent rest stop"....Dodinsky....
Peace, prayers and hugs..... and, Many Happy Trails to you and your new gal..Blue...Scottie...Gail....
