Widows & Widowers Support Group
This community is dedicated to those who have lost a husband, wife, or partner. Anything is open for discussion here, with the hope that we can focus on grief, bereavement, life after loss, and continuing on after a great loss.

I meant to provide some input when I first read your post; but, as usual, it seems as if time got away from me. When I was a teenager, we had a guy break into our home and terrorize my widowed mother, my older sister, my younger brother, and me. I was sexually assaulted. This one act of violence left a huge mark on all of our lives. It took a very long time before I could stay alone during the day, and I never fully adjusted to staying alone once it became dark outside. I have struggled for years with fear of someone breaking in at night. My husband was so good about never leaving me alone since he knew I was afraid. When he passed away, I had no idea what I was going to do. The house that we lived in means so much since it had been in my family for years. There was no way that I wanted to give it up and move. I have neighbors but am surrounded by fields and a woods in the back. I have the luxury of having a beautiful yard. I also did not want either of my children with families living with me. I had to make a decision so I made up my mind that I was going to stay here and not be driven by fear every single night when it got dark. Although I checked out alarm systems, I decided not to go that route. My son who is a welder made decorative window guards for all the first floor windows. It's amazing; you don't even notice them, and they provide me with the security of knowing someone can't come in through a window. Although we had one pole light at the back porch, I put up another larger light on the garage that illuminates the back yard. I did not want motion lights because of all the critters that roam at night. The last thing that I did was get a little dog. I had not wanted to take care of an animal and be tied down by one, but it was the best thing that I did. She is always so glad to see me after I get home from work or when I go out somewhere, and she loves to get outside with me when I do yard work. She sure helps when I am out at night and come home. Yes, I sometimes go out at night and come home when it is dark; but I just made up my mind that I was not going to be ruled by fear and stay at home if I had the opportunity to do something. This has not been easy. I have had my moments (oh, and I forgot to mention that I do have a shotgun, just in case someone wants to mess with me); but, if I can do it, anyone else can, too. We don't have to lose everything that we hold dear. I figure that, after losing my husband, I had already had the worst thing happen to me as an adult. We don't have to lose everything that we hold dear. I hope that you can put your uneasiness and fear behind you and do a few things to make you comfortable enough to be able to stay where you want to be.

I will wait till I have a clear idea of what the future holds; meantime I use a security system at night and leaving house I also activate the security system just to maintain the habit.
I would have gotten a dog, but we had one for over 12 years, and I am well aware what it entails to have a dog in a city.
I used to be more alert at night, but somehow the switch happened, and I fall asleep and stay asleep without being overly guarded.
I really want to get to the point when I feel excited about another place and want to move. This hasn't happened yet, but I need it to move forward with my life.
Since you are in a country, I would consider getting a dog, since you do not have to walk him and clean the city sidewalks from his droppings as I'd have to since I am in a city.
