The patch and other NRTs do still provide nicotine, but at a level less than you received while smoking. That still places you into a (milder) state of nicotine deprivation, your dopamine level still drops, and your brain wants you to smoke to kick it back up (to get its "reward").
Rewards are still important, no matter your method(s) of quitting, and still help your brain recover faster. Plus, they are fun! :)
