Sexual abuse is a relative cultural term used to describe sexual relations and behavior between two or more parties which are considered criminally and/or morally offensive. Different types of sexual abuse involve: Non-consensual, forced physical sexual behavior such as rape, incest or sexual assault, or psychological forms of abuse, such as verbal sexual behavior or...

"MAY TRIGGER"
I know I have posted to friends that I was not going to be able to spend as much time on the board for a while due to personal issues - and I had not intended to post anything as once I have, I try to watch and check back for replies to my post. But this one subject I thought was worth posting for nothing more than fuller comprehension, understanding and clarification reasons.
In the past I have posted about my abuse, I have mentioned that my cousin and uncle abused me starting when I was the age of 8 for my cousin and 13 for my uncle. I have heard from various people about the "pedophiles" in my life. And I have heard that phrase used often on this site; in many cases the survivors here may have been the victim of a true pedophile, and I am not going to say whether they were or not. But again, for clarification of the issue, I think an understanding of pedophilia may help some. I know this may sound like splitting hairs, but I just wanted to make clear a definition issue here.
Actually neither my cousin or my uncles were true pedophiles. A true, or exclusive pedophile ONLY derives sexual arousal or pleasure through having fantasies or sexual contact with prepubescent children ( DSM-5 and IDC-10 definitions, loosely). They may be married, but often cannot perform in the bedroom with an adult wife unless there is some "child" stimulation involved - role play, pictures, kiddy porn.
My cousin and my uncle were what I refer to as "opportunistic sexual abusers" or even "sexual predators" as both had relationships with many age ranges. Since his death I found out that my cousin abused me, friends his same age, and his older brother. With the young children he performed pedophilic acts, but he was an "equal opportunity abuser" - he did not care for gender, age, or race - anyone was fair game. He would, to put it like my father would "screw anything that was not moving too fast".
My uncle also performed pedophilic acts with me, but once he was divorced and moved to San Francisco, his neighbor informed the family the he had overnight "guests" of all ages, but none that appeared underage. He died several years ago also and his ex-wife had "checked up on him" as her children often flew out to see him. She was concerned about her youngest being around her ex, but not enough to keep him at home! No one really knows whether he abused his own two sons, but I would put nothing past him.
If you are a survivor of childhood abuse, you probably could not care less about the "label" -- for with you, the abuser was a pedophile. But in the technical term, they may also have raped other ages. That is why I bring this up.
A victim of abuse that I worked with several years ago talked of how she was abused by her father, who was also known to keep her children after school; both girls in their later teens. I asked her why she trusted him around them and she said "Well, he is a pedophile and they only like YOUNG children, right? My girls are both much older than I was."
We, of course had to do some quick arrangements to make sure the girls had a safer place to be other than at "Grandpa's" house until their mother got off work. And we had to educate her on how some abusers will sexually abuse various ages of people, as long as they can do it and make sure that the person does not say anything to anyone - so ANY vulnerable population can be their targets.
Also, this bring up another subject - sexual abuse of elders. Of all the sexual abuse research that is done, there is virtually NO research on this type of elder abuse. There is a "-philia" that goes with someone who exclusively has sex or fantasizes about elders - it is called "gerontophilia" or "gerophlilia" and the reason that there is so little known about it is that it is reported so infrequently. Elderly men and women are not going to just admit that they were raped. As an Elder Abuse Investigator, we found that many of our clients had been molested by younger men and women, often family members, and usually because they contracted some form of venereal disease or other infection related to sexual activity. And one reason they do not report is often because the abuser is the family member that takes them in and keeps them from going to a Long-term Care Facility.
To assume your abuser is a true pedophile may leave older children and disabled people at risk, as it may be assumed they have no interest in anything BUT children - the percentage of true pedophiles is extremely low compared to the abusers that will take advantage of anyone they can.
I hope this helps some to understand that "pedophiles" may not be true or exclusive pedophiles and may sexually abuse others that you may not think of due to the survivors older age.
Thanks for listening to all my ramblings - I just hope that someone can use this information to protect others in bad situations, regardless of their age.
All my best for a while- at least I am trying to give myself a breather!!!

I was sexually assaulted as a kid. I find it hard to accept that another person's actions caused me so much harm. He made bad choices and now I am paying the price. Stupid PTSD!
Maybe the key is the word vulnerability. Predators seem to brutalize and dominate anyone who can't or won't fight back. It seems to be more about their need to boost their ego by overcoming and dominating another person than it is about sex.
The words themselves are part of the problem in a way. Pedophilia means "child-loving". Obviously it's not about love at all. Rape is not a crime of love or passion either. And molesting means "bothering" according to the dictionary...that doesn't come anywhere close to fitting what happens to an abused child.
Maybe changing the language would help people see these crimes more clearly. The justice system is starting to use terms like sexual battery. That sounds a lot closer to the truth.
My eighteen-year-old sister didn't molest her eight-year-old brother when she made all her sexual advances toward him, she attacked him.
I am glad that I was able to bring this point up - I am not sure if you have talked of your rape here before, but I am glad you spoke up now. There is the "shame" issue to contend with whether you are dependent on your abuser or not. And people of our age (I am 54) just find it hard to voice that we were abused by younger persons. I was always amazed at how the older male clients that I dealt with would NEVER have considered themselves molested, raped or abused, if the young person were female - they would brag about it - usually after reporting that the person took off with their medication or stole money, belongings, etc. from them. But the women who were abused my young makes were so traumatized it took a long time to get them to even talk about it.

I do hope this made some pretty fuzzy issues a little clearer for you. Yes, the Greek suffixes of -philia, -philo, -phile etc. means "to love, to be attracted to, to have a fondness for" and all these meanings are laced with a positive spin. But in English, we mostly use those suffixes in medical or psychiatric settings, and in that sense there is no positive or negative attachments. Also, remember that this system was devised in the 1800's, a rather repressed time when it comes to talking about love, sex or so forth.
However, they can become very specific - "korophilia" for instance is pedophilia except the object of the attraction is strictly an attraction to young males. The system works in this sense, but in the common language, it is often misspoken.
Thus, when I talk of my abusers, I prefer Sexual Predators as they both targeted, groomed and stalked me, as a hunter stalks it's prey. And they both were the type of men that were constantly on the lookout for the "vulnerable" people in their lives to abuse.
We often talk of sexual abuser of children and being abused in our youth on this site, but unfortunately the facts are there are a lot of people out there who will take advantage of any age of person.
Again, I hope this helps others to see that they need to be aware of the danger to ALL groups of people, not just children, as some predators don't care about age - just their own desires and control over others.

I had not heard of that term used here at all - I can see some of the reason for it, although most people in the states understand that when you use a -philia or -phile suffix it really is not intended to imply true love, but often a diagnostic term of those who have an unhealthy need or attraction to something. I really doubt that the majority of people even know the Greek translation of such, they just realize it is referring to a disease, a disability or a fetish of some sort.
Pedocriminal - Hummm. Will have to think about that one. It does show both the desire and the criminal aspect, so who know, maybe that it a more acceptable phraseology. I wonder if it is used for all sex crimes against children - it would make sense that it would. And then if the abuser ONLY abused children, then pedophile would be appropriate. Not a bad option.
Thanks for the info - the french often have more open minds for such - I am sure the US will be slow to follow any other lead, for as RichieD said, they are just now starting to use "sexual battery" more and that term has been on the books for many years! But few people really understand the definition of that either - and most of the cases I have seen it used for was Domestic Violence issues, where the lawyer does not want to say that a man raped his wife, for so many people still think that such is impossible due to the commitment of the marriage vows and such other nonsense.
Interesting addition to the post- thanks!!

I was there 5 nights a week, my mom was working nights...and I think dad craved sexual novelty.
...I personally wonder, not if I HAVE half-siblings, more like how MANY are out there...
It's a weird thought.
...OTOH, at least they didn't get to grow up with that creepy ratbastard in their life!
thanks for the post
rich
did he use his size to over power me...yes... did he really want to do that to me?? really i dont believe that was in his plans for the day.
did it hurt like hell...oh yeah..
sadly the things he did to me was nothing compared to what his dad and family was doing to him...
i do have to say, if non of that ever happened, i might not be in here talking to all y'all today, and i would probably only believe that only happens to "other people, " or any of those stereo type that we all hate so much...
sigh, me being long winded again... sorry everyone...
good job writting that refuse, and..... never mind, doesnt matter
My cousin also had a horrible life at home - his father beat him over the least thing and he was the "black sheep" in the entire family - I suspect his father abused him sexually but there is no way of knowing exactly.
And for years I said "he wasn't really being as abusive as he was using others to take out his frustration and anger from what his Dad was doing to him". But the fact is the same - many people live in horrible homes and CHOOSE not to perpetrate that abuse upon others - when they do, they become abusers, and that is the fact of life. It has no bearings on whether they were "venting" - there are productive ways to vent that do not include hurting others. In my opinion as long as you wish to make excuses for your abuser, it will be very hard to place the blame where it belongs - squarely upon him. This si the unfortunate cycle of abuse - but it is up to each of us to break that cycle - not to continue it. I am sorry for what happened to you, but you will find true healing in feeling sorry for the one who abused you. This only leads to confusion and a hurdle for you to overcome. You abuser had a choice and he made it. The choice he made was to abuse you regardless of why or what he faced at home.
All my best -
