29 more days until I have to see my abuser again and testify in court. In all, 2 other girls have come forward with stories similar to mine. I'm so scared I won't be able to do it. That I'll shut down when I see him and won't be able to speak. 5 years of abuse and a lifetime of nightmares. I've tried everything to prepare for seeing him, but I can't imagine it. If anyone has taken their abuser to court, I could really use advice on how to cope with seeing him again. This site has helped me so much in telling my story and I just want to thank all the amazing people who support everyone. It changes lives.

i'm sorry you have to go through this. you should feel safe in a court room. there are police officers there to protect you. he can't hurt you in court. try to remember that. god bless you for being courageous to take this step. you will help put him away so he cannot hurt anyone else.

Ask if the victim advocate(s) can be there.. sometimes they will stand between you and the creep, just so you don’t have to look at it..
I’m sorry to say, the cross examination from the creeps attorney is hard to take.. they’ll try to show you luring, or catch you in a mispronunciations or anything to disprove you... this is very hard... again, talk to the victims advocates ...

You are much more stronger than the creep is..
you are talking, you are standing up against their evilness, you are telling them that they can’t control you anymore!!!
You have that strength... don’t loose that!

If u have a counselor, psych, advocate or any thing like that they can ask the court if ur testimony can be done by video. In other words ur not in court and not in the court room and give ur testimony that way so u don't have to be in the same room.

In the UK you don't have to see the abuser, you can sit behind a screen or give evidence in a room adjacent to the court room. Ask your council if this can be arranged.
I have been on a jury where this happened the girl gave evidence via video link.

My brother took his abuse to court only last year. He had support from a court advocate and extra counselling. When he gave evidence it was from behind a screen. The jury and the lawyers could see him but not the abuser.
Take all the support you are offered and also come her for support too.
Ask your advocate and counsellor questions if you are not sure on things.

Here is a hint...if you have not done so, go and observe another hearing in court prior to your testimony date just to become a little familiar with all the trappings and formality. That might help lower the nervousness a little bit.

    I was sexually assaulted as a kid.  I find it hard to accept that another person's actions caused me so much harm.  He made bad choices and now I am paying the price.  Stupid PTSD!
