Schizophrenia is a psychiatric diagnosis that describes a mental disorder characterized by impairments in the perception of reality and by significant social dysfunction. Untreated schizophrenia is typically characterized by demonstrating disorganized thinking and experiencing delusions or auditory hallucinations.
I was told that I'm suffering from severe psychosis, but I'm not sure whether or not that's it. I hear voices and see figures (I have full blown conversations with them). I got put on medications that worked, but after a month or so they stopped working and everything came back. I got put in inpatient and put on new medications. They have been working, but occasionally I hear voices and see figures. I honestly don't know what's going on anymore and it's scaring me.

My personal favorite definition of "psychosis" is that you are caught in your head. The cause of any given psychosis is far more complicated, but please don't be afraid of the word. Psychotic episodes come and go in the best of lives.
