Schizophrenia Support Group
Schizophrenia is a psychiatric diagnosis that describes a mental disorder characterized by impairments in the perception of reality and by significant social dysfunction. Untreated schizophrenia is typically characterized by demonstrating disorganized thinking and experiencing delusions or auditory hallucinations.
I was diagnosed with Schizoaffective disorder, from my understanding it's like schizophrenia and a mood disorder like bipolar and depression. It's basically that I can't be diagnosed as a schizophrenic or depressed/bipolar, it sucks. I'm switching up Doctors and it's been hard because my parents refuse to talk to me about the disorder. They always brush it off like I haven't been diagnosed yet when I've actually been diagnosed before my freshman year! It's frustrating because I don't know anyone who has this disorder and when I bring it up with my friends they look at me like I'm insane!

I, personally, find nothing easy in talking about the details of mental illness. I don't count spouting stereotypes and opinions as talking about the details. Inside my own strictly personals, the people closest to me seem to be the hardest to discuss those details with. The cliche I like for the phenom is that they are so entangled in those details that they can't see the forest for the trees.
I find it much easier to talk about my symptoms within my therapy support network, especially my peer support network. Within my peer support network I can let my guard down allot more than I can with friends and family members. It is still hard, but sometimes "Easier" is the best I can hope for. The fact that my peer supporters are living similar dilemmas gives them insights I hope my loved ones never need to understand.
But that is me. . .
Welcome aboard. Hope you find healing companionship here.
The Bipolar Board is much more active then this board sweetie ... We've had several people on here with schizoaffective disorder and you're right it has symptoms of both disorders ... There is good treatment though!!!
This is a time for patience and I know that it isn't easy.... It often takes some time to find the right meds and find other coping skills... You will though... I have BP and have had it for over 25 years...
You parents trying to exclude you from your treatment are wrong however it's probably due to a lack of understanding ... Big hug for you and a blessing
