Pulmonary Embolism Support Group
By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.
Sad but true Clots are not age discriminatory.

Youngest patient I have heard of but have not personally met was 14 years old. His mother had shared her son's story with NBCA (story is on NBCA's website) when I was on their Board of Directors:

Kids undergoing Cancer treatment as well as kids with Nephrotic syndrome are at high risk of suffering PE. I'm sure there are other medical conditions also but the two mentioned above are ones I recall from memory.

During my tenure at the National Blood Clot Alliance I met quite a few families who young children had suffered a DVT/PE. Though occurence is rare in young children, it can happen; deaths are even more rare.
Here is a newsletter we did back in 2007 that discusses blood clot in young adult and children:

Yep, that's me on the front page of the newsletter.
