By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.

Surgery after PE

Hi! I am 2 1/2 years out from having a PE in my lung when I was 19 weeks pregnant. My doctors believe it was completely due to my pregnancy. My son is just turning 2 and I have been off blood thinners since he was 3 months. I have been feeling great, even my anxiety has died down which I thought would NEVER happen!


I have now been diagnosed with a Hernia that requires surgery. Because surgery is a risk factor for clots I am terrified! Has anyone undergone surgery and been okay?

Yep. Discuss the plan with your surgeon. When I had my gall bladder removed, I did lovenox that same night after the surgery.

Yeah for me they stop my anticoagulation two days before surgery and pick it up same day after (I'm on warfarin). I understand they do the same for dental care. It shouldn't be a huge risk, just be vigilant about the other stuff they recommend to avoid DVTS when you're post-surgery (stay hydrated, move around, elevate your legs for a while, etc).

I also had these compression things that went around my legs, post procedure, that automatically pumped.

While I haven't had any surgery & haven't been on blood thinners for a long time, I know I still have to disclose I had clotted in the past before any procedure so they could take the necessary precautions.

    We all have 24 hours in a day.  How we spend these hours is important.  Watching a little bit of a video about how sitting affects us made me aware of how much sitting and laying down I do.  Gonna have to work on that.Your turn.  Tell me another truth.
